Will dew be a factor in Ahmedabad for the India-Australia final? Has it affected matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium at World Cup 2023?

India will take on Australia in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, scheduled on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Both the teams are operating in top gear in the ongoing World Cup. While India are yet to lose a match in the tournament, Australia too are on an eight-game winning streak.

India routed New Zealand in the semi final 1 of the competition at the Wankhede Stadium by 70 runs. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer scored hundreds to take the team's total to 397. Mohammad Shami ran riot with the ball, bagging as many as seven wickets to wipe off New Zealand at a score of 327.

Australia defeated South Africa in a low-scoring thriller on Thursday. Chasing 213 runs, Australia lost seven wickets, but Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc saw them through to book a place in the finals.

The showpiece clash between India and Australia will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. There is a concern among many on how dew could play a decisive factor in the outcome of the match.

But is the dew factor really relevant at this venue? Let's look back at how it has impacted the previous 2023 World Cup matches, which took place here.

How has dew impacted World Cup 2023 matches at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad?

The Narendra Modi Stadium has hosted four World Cup 2023 fixtures so far. Three of these games have been won by the sides batting second.

However, it must be noted that dew has not played much of a role in these results.

Starting with match no.1, New Zealand defeated England by nine wickets in the World Cup 2023 opener. It was a fresh wicket, offering favourable batting conditions. England had posted a total of 282 runs while batting first and it was never going to be enough for the bowling line-up that they had.

Then, it hosted the India versus Pakistan clash. Pakistan got bowled out for just 191 runs in the first innings. India took just 30.3 overs to chase the target, meaning by the time match ended, there was not much dew on the field, even if there was a chance it forming.

In another game, Australia beat England by 33 runs. Adam Zampa took a three-for in the second innings while defending 286 runs, adding weight to the fact that dew did not hamper the team batting first one bit.

In the most recent match played here, South Africa successfully chased down 245 runs versus Afghanistan. However, it is worth nothing that the Proteas lost five wickets during the run-chase, and all of these dismissals were inflicted by the spinners.

We arrive at a conclusion that while chasing has been relatively easier at this ground due to the pitch easing up in the second innings, it has not been because of dew.

Dew affects the bowling team significantly by making the outfield wet, making it difficult to grip the ball. However, the World Cup 2023 matches have not been affected by this phenomenon as various anti-dew chemicals are being used.
