One day into the 2023 NHL playoffs, it seems like fans can expect a lot more sudden death overtime play than we’ve seen in years past.
With two of Monday’s first four postseason games going into overtime, the 2023 postseason is on pace to breeze past the total number of extra periods played in the last nine years, which saw a total percentage of OT games that ranged from 11.9% in 2018 to 33.3% in 2017.

A year ago, the NHL postseason had 14 playoff games out of 89 contests, resulting in a 15.7% rate of extra hockey.

Between 2020 and 2022, 24.2% of NHL playoff contests went to overtime, which is up from the previous six years. Between 2017 and 2019, 21.6% of games went beyond 60 minutes, and in 2014 through 2016, a total of 23.4% of games went to OT.

Of the 13 regular season games between the eight teams playing Tuesday, three went to overtime — resulting in a 23% OT rate.
