Winx wins like a queen to complete career that was so much more than numbers

Winx's career came to an end with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. She won 33 consecutive races, a world record 25 Group One races and a staggering $26.4 million.

Winx was bought for $230,000 at the Gold Coast Yearling Sales in 2013 by Magic Bloodstock. She won her first three races, but came second, second and fifth in her next four. Next came a win at Rosehill, a fifth at Randwick and a second at Caloundra. In the Sunshine Coast Guineas, she won the last 400 metres. The 2015 Epsom was another early sign of what racing might have on its hands. She was caught three wide most of the trip, behind Entirely Platinum, Hooked and Ecuador up front. Hugh Bowman moved his mount forward.

Winx's winning streak has attracted a lot of attention. Peter Moody is the trainer of Black Caviar. He explains why the streak is so popular. He believes the more the streaks go, the greater the excitement. The public loves their champions. They have seen them before. Winx is a champion. She has 25 wins from as many starts. Black caviar had 25 starts from 25 races.

Winx won 18th race in the Warwick Stakes. She was four lengths behind the field at the start. Winx came back to win the race. Black Caviar won the Diamond Jubilee Stake at Ascot. Red Excitement won at Randwick. She is better than good horses. Moody and Bowman think she shouldn't have won. They think some horses would have had the talent but not the determination. Some would also have the spirit but without the speed. she had both. The bottom line is some would not have been able to get back in. but some had spirit and the skill. and they wouldn't be able. to overcome adversity.

Winx has been ridden by 10 different jockeys in her career. Jim Cassidy rode her in the first trial, Larry was on board at the Sunshine Coast and Bowman was riding when Winx won the Epsom. Bowman and WinX won a first Cox Plate together. No other jockey has ridden Win x in four years since the win at Epsoms. The relationship between trainer and horse is also important. Chris Waller managed Win X's career for four consecutive years.

Winx won the second Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in 2016. It was billed as a likely race between Winx and the John O'Shea-trained Hartnell. Hartnel was the favourite for the Melbourne Cup. WinX won by eight lengths easing down. It ranked up with Might and Power's 1997 Caulfield Cup win.

Winx won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Rosehill. She had already won it twice. The pressure was high for her final race. When Waller took off the blinkers from Winx, she kicked out and hit the fence.

Winx's career is coming to an end. Moody acknowledges the pressure attached to being associated with such a successful horse. Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman have been successful in their careers. Luke Nolen and Moody were involved in similar situations.  

Winx won her final race. Luke Nolen and himself wouldn't swap it for anything in the world. Luke and Winx are relieved. WinX was mentioned in same breath as Phar Lap.

Winx won four Cox Plates in her career. She was never sent overseas to challenge Europe's best at Ascot or Asia's top in Hong Kong. Moody believes it's no longer a problem that she didn't travel overseas. He believes that Australia's racing is as good as most of the world.

Winx won her final race in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick in one minute, 33.27 seconds. She was almost 0.4 of a second quicker than her previous best over the distance. Winx's final victory in Queen Elizabeth Stake brought her prizemoney total of $26,447,675.

Moody believes that more champions will be born in the future. Black Caviar won 25 straight races and is considered one of the greatest horses of all time. Winx has broken all records and can be considered to be the best of them all.
