The Caulfield Guineas winner ‘who could have beaten Winx'

Only four horses have won six or more Group 1s in a single season since the introduction of Group racing in Australia. Kingston Town, Black Caviar and Winx are the only ones to have done that. Weekend Hussler won the 2008 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year.

Weekend Hussler won the Caulfield Guineas and Coolmore Stud Stakes in his first season. Rawiller reckons he could have beaten Winx over a mile. He compares him to Black Heart Bart. Weekend Hussler didn't race as a two-year-old and was unplaced in a 1208m maiden at Sale on debut. Luke Nolen rode him on his debut and it was his only ride. Chris Symons rode Weekend Husser to Cranbourne maiden second-up. Brad Rawiller got the call up for Weekend's third start at Sandown Hillside. Rawer had a lot of riding experience with the McDonald stable. He was told by trainer Ross McDonald that he would ride one of his horses in the Caulfield Guineas. The stable had had bets on Weekend to win the Guines.

Weekend Hussler won the Caulfield Guineas. Jockey Brad Rawiller was nervous before the race. He was invited to a committee luncheon at Caufield on Friday. He had won Group 1s in WA and SA but not in Melbourne. Weekend Husser was an even-money favourite. Rawerl was riding at The Valley that night. His girlfriend wasn't answering her phone. She wasn’t answering the phone either. The jockey called his brother Nash. It was his first Group One win in the Melbourne area. They were both nervous. There was a sense of expectation.

Weekend Hussler jumped a $1.95 favourite in the Guineas. Rawiller came out wide approaching the 600m to avoid being stuck behind slow horses. Ross said in lead-up that if you have your house on a horse, you'll end up with two.
