Liverpool vs West Ham United predictions

Before the 2023/24 season got under way, opinions of Liverpool were divided.

Some felt they would not even finish in the top four. They missed out last season despite a late rally and, in this view, had not sufficiently strengthened their squad to make up the ground on those that finished above them.

Others asserted that the Reds were in fact the likeliest disruptors of Manchester City’s recent dominance of the division.

Liverpool have kept pace with Pep Guardiola’s side in the past, while they remain the only team to have finished above City in the standings since 2017.

Neither opinion has been proved correct yet. After all, we are just five games into the new campaign.

Moreover, you could still make the case either way. Those confident that Jurgen Klopp’s side are ready to compete for the championship would point to the fact that only City have more points than their 13.

That is despite the fact that the Reds have already had to face Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa this term - not the easiest opening by any means.

Yet Liverpool still look vulnerable in ways that they did not during their best years under Klopp. The pressing is not as sharp, a new-look midfield is still working things out and, most crucially, the defence is not as solid.

Still, Liverpool fans will be delighted with the start their team has made as they seek a fifth consecutive Premier League victory when West Ham United come to town on Sunday.

📝 Liverpool vs West Ham United betting tips

West Ham United have started the season well but Liverpool should get the job done on home turf.

Liverpool to score in both halves - 5/6 (bet365)

Liverpool sit third in the Premier League standings ahead of gameweek six.

The underlying statistics suggest that their results have broadly been in line with their performances.

In the expected goals table, which essentially ranks the quality of the chances a team creates and concedes, Liverpool sit fourth - behind only Manchester City, Arsenal and, somewhat surprisingly, Chelsea.

We are still dealing with a small sample size, of course, but Jurgen Klopp will be pleased with much of what he has seen so far.

One thing he will be keen to improve is the way his team starts games. In three of their four wins, Liverpool have conceded the first goal: Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers have all drawn first blood against the Reds.

Do not be surprised if Klopp’s team are quick out of the blocks on Sunday in a bid to avoid another slow start.

West Ham are a cautious side under David Moyes and they will sit back and look to counter-attack, but Liverpool’s attacking quality could wear them down.

Over 9.5 shots on target - 8/11 (bet365)

West Ham were beaten by Manchester City last weekend, but before that they took 10 points from the first 12 on offer.

Many tipped the Hammers to struggle amid rumours of a split between David Moyes and those above him in the hierarchy at the London Stadium.

But West Ham have demonstrated that they could be European contenders again - and they have done it while playing the Moyes way.

The veteran Scot is more than happy to cede possession and play on the break, a strategy which worked particularly well in a 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last month.

West Ham will be more concerned with the quality of the opportunities they create at Anfield than the quantity.

Liverpool have averaged the joint-fourth most shots this term and they should get plenty of attempts on target against opponents that will stand off them for the most part.

Mohamed Salah over 0.5 assists - 9/4 (bet365)

In purely financial terms, Liverpool ought to have sold Mohamed Salah in the summer.

Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad were prepared to pay a world-record transfer fee in excess of £200m - and this for a 31-year-old who will be out of contract in two years’ time.

But football is not played on a spreadsheet, and you cannot accurately value a player without first working out how important he is to his team.

Salah, needless to say, is essential to Liverpool’s prospects this season. That is why Klopp insisted his most prized asset was not for sale at any price, especially once the English transfer deadline had passed.

Salah has made a bright start to the season. He has had at least one goal involvement in each of his five Premier League appearances to date.

Interestingly, he has set up more strikes than he has scored: four assists versus two goals going into the weekend.

No player in the division has more assists to his name than Salah, who is not quite as rapid as he once was and therefore does not run in behind as often.

The Egyptian has always created chances as well as converted them, so this bet looks like excellent value.
