LASK vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool, in truth, would rather not be here.

Despite a late rally which saw them win seven games in a row between the middle of April and the middle of May, Jurgen Klopp’s side missed out on a top-four finish in the Premier League last term.

That means they are out of the Champions League for the first time since 2016/17, Klopp’s first full season at the helm.

Had they been competing in Europe’s foremost tournament this time around, Liverpool would have been one of the leading contenders to win it. They have done so once already under Klopp, as well as reaching two more finals.

Instead, Liverpool will have to make do with the Europa League. Unsurprisingly given their pedigree in continental competition, the Reds are the favourites to lift the trophy in Dublin next May.

The key question is whether Liverpool will take the Europa League as seriously as they would do the Champions League.

They reached the final in 2016 and were going all-out for the trophy that season, but that was before they had won the bigger prizes of Champions League (2019) and Premier League (2020) under Klopp.

Liverpool have made a bright start to the Premier League season, taking 13 points from the first 15 on offer.

If they are ultimately forced to choose between a title tilt and a Europa League challenge, there is only going to be one winner.

For now, though, Liverpool should be pretty comfortable in Group E alongside LASK, Union Saint-Gilloise and Toulouse.

📝 LASK vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool are the leading contenders to win the Europa League and they should get their campaign off to a winning start.

Liverpool half-time/full-time - 10/11 (bet365)

Liverpool’s results have been impressive up to now, but there is room for improvement when it comes to performances.

In three of their four wins so far in 2023/24, Liverpool have conceded the first goal: to Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On each occasion they came back to emerge victorious, but it is a pattern that will not be sustainable in the long term.

The Reds started particularly slowly against Wolves at the weekend. They could easily have been two or three goals down at the interval.

Klopp’s team were much improved in the second period at Molineux, scoring three times through Cody Gakpo, Andy Robertson and Harvey Elliott.

But the manager will be acutely aware of the need to start hitting the ground running rather than trudging.

Against LANZ on matchday one of the Europa League, Liverpool will look to rectify their recent problem by taking control of the game early on.

Only Manchester City and Arsenal scored more first-half goals than Liverpool in the Premier League last season, so they are certainly capable of being more productive in the opening 45 minutes.

Liverpool to win to nil - 5/4 (bet365)

LASK, or Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub to give them their full name, are one-time Austrian champions who reached the round of 16 of the Europa Conference League the season before last.

They were eliminated at that stage by Slavia Prague, who registered a 7-5 aggregate victory over the Austrian outfit.

After missing out on European football last term, LASK booked their spot in this tournament by virtue of a third-place finish in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Thomas Sageder’s side then defeated Zrinjski Mostar in the play-offs to earn their place in Group E, where they will be up against it from the get-go.

LASK are widely expected to finish bottom of this section and while they could possibly upset Toulouse or Union Saint-Gilloise at home, it is difficult to envisage them recording a positive result against Liverpool.

The Reds have not exactly been rock-solid defensively so far this season: they have not kept a clean sheet in any of their five matches to date.

But with Virgil van Dijk available for Thursday’s game, this could be the time for their first shut-out of 2023/24.

Even if Klopp shuffles his pack ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Ham United, Liverpool’s backline should emerge from this encounter unscathed.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 20/21 (bet365)

With five options to fill the three attacking berths in their 4-3-3 formation, two of Liverpool’s forward players are bound to be disappointed in any given game.

Klopp has used Gakpo in midfield on occasion, thus allowing him to squeeze four of the attackers into the same XI, but we are unlikely to see that experiment too often.

Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz were the unlucky duo to miss out against Wolves, so both players will be hoping to be back in the starting line-up on Thursday.

Nunez in particular is likely to be included in the XI as he seeks to build on a positive start to the season which has seen him score two goals and provide an assist in just 140 minutes on the field.

Nunez is not the smoothest striker but he is a real handful when he gets going, and the LASK defence will have their hands full in trying to keep him under wraps.

This looks like an excellent chance for the Uruguay international to add to his goal tally for the season.
