World Cup Shocker: Canadian Sports Bettors are Hammering Canada

There are three bets on Canada for every one on Belgium at Sports Interaction. There are also three times more bets if the team is from Canada. The Canadian team hasn't played in the World Cup since 1986. British Columbia Lottery Corp. reports 99% of bets are on the Canadian side advancing beyond the group stage and 82% are bets that they will win Group F. If Canada wins the entire World cup in 2022, it would cost the book three-times as much as it paid out for Tiger Woods' win at the Masters, Tampa Bay's Super Bowl victory, and the Toronto Raptors' NBA Championship.

Belgium's World Cup odds are somewhere around +1,600 and +2,000, while Canada's are +15,00 or higher. Canada had drawn 25% to 30% of bets as of around noon on Wednesday, but took just 8% and 22% respectively. DraftKings noted on Tuesday that Canada was taking just eight percent of the overall handle for the match against Belgium. Betano reports that Canadians have been more cutthroat in their wagering.

FanDuel reports that Canada has the most bets of any team in Group F to advance to the next round of the World Cup. Canada's most populous province launched a competitive and regulated market for internet gambling in April. There are now 20 legal providers of sports betting sites in Ontario.
