Wrexham vs. Wigan Odds, Predictions & Betting Tips

The EFL Cup first round starts on Tuesday evening with 29 ties taking place in total. Wrexham against Wigan is the game that has been chosen to be shown live on Sky Sports, and here at BettingOdds.com we’ve previewed the action and provided two bets which we think represent good value in the betting markets.

After being sent off the 3/1 favourites to win the League Two title, Wrexham were given a dose of reality on Saturday as their first Football League game since 2008, ended in a 5-3 defeat to MK Dons.

The last time the Red Dragons participated in the EFL Cup was all the way back in 2007 when they were beaten in the second round 5-0 by Aston Villa.

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney was on the scoresheet that evening, bagging two of the five goals for Villa and he will be hoping for a similar scoreline on Tuesday as his side make the short trip to North Wales.

The Latics have an eight points deduction to deal with this season, but got their campaign off to the best possible start last Saturday with an impressive 2-1 away win at League One favourites Derby County.

Both teams may look to prioritise the league this term over a run in the cup, with plenty of changes expected from both sides for this one.

Wrexham vs Wigan Tips

The amount of eyeballs on Wrexham this season due to their Hollywood owners is sure to bring a certain amount of pressure. As we have seen before with sides such as Salford, getting out of League Two is no easy task.

We also think Wrexham may well be priced a little shorter than what they should be in certain betting markets and this could well be the case on Tuesday with the home side being priced odds-on against a team who were relegated from The Championship last term.

It will be worth checking team news before kick-off but at 5/6 Wigan look a solid price in the Double Chance market, meaning this bet will land if the visitors win or draw the game (after 90 minutes).

Both of these sides were involved in entertaining affairs on Saturday and a high scoring game looks a strong possibility at The Racecourse Ground on Tuesday.

Shaun Maloney may give debuts to summer arrivals James Balagizi and Kell Watts who have both arrived on loan, but with Charlie Wyke in attack Wigan can cause Wrexham serious problems and have the quality to get on the scoresheet numerous times.

This is very much a price-play based on the generous odds of 6/1, but Wigan to win the game and both teams to score looks a wise bet here, with those odds only implying a 14% chance of success.
