Irish Grand National Trends to Help You Find the Winner

The BoyleSports Irish Grand National, this Easter Monday at Fairyhouse races, is always one of the big highlights over this latest holiday period.

There will be another big field heading to post today (10th April) in search of the €270,000 first prize. Plus, with the Aintree Grand National only next Saturday (15th April) and the Scottish National the week after (22nd) – it’s National mayhem at the moment!

Let’s look at some of the main 2023 Irish Grand National stats in a bit more detail – which can hopefully point you in the direction of the winning horse.

What Date & Time Is The 2023 Irish Grand National

Time/Date: 5:00pm (Monday 10th April 2023)
Racecourse: Fairyhouse
 Purse/Winner: €270,000
 TV: ITV4 / RacingTV

95% Of the Last 19 Winners Carried 10st 13lbs or Less

Being a handicap then weight carried in the Irish Grand National is a good place to start. The race is run over a gruelling 3m5f trip, so it’s no real shock that a massive 18 of the last 19 winners had just 10st 13lbs on their backs.

The Irish Grand National trend will be able to knock out a fair few straight away – but we can also take it further.

If this trend is to continue, the top four on the card – Royale Pagaille, Espanito Bello, Busselton and I Am Maximus has this to overcome.

16 Of the Last 19 Winners Also Won With 10st 8lbs or Less

With 84% of the last 19 winners also having only 10st 8lbs, then if you’re feeling brave you can put a line through a load more. While it could also pay to note that a decent 13 of the last 19 winners also had just 10st 6lbs.

Backed up last year with Lord Lariat having just 9st 12lbs, while 4 of the last 7 winners won with 10st 6lbs of less on their backs.

A fair few tick this stat – but we can still put a line through the top 9 on the card (horses 1-9).

Look For Horses That Ran in The Last 8 Weeks

Having had a recent run is another trend to look out for. Okay, most of the runners in the Irish Grand National field will fit the bill here, but it’s still worth having on your radar in case there are any horses coming back from a break.

This trend is backed up with 16 of the last 19 winners having raced within the last 8 weeks.

Just Three Winning Irish Grand National Favourites in The Last 19 Runnings

The Irish Grand National has also not been a great race for favourite backers. Only three winning market leaders since 2003. However, on a plus this trio of winners did come in the last 8 runners – so is the tide turning?

While 11 of the last 19 jollies were also unplaced. This year’s Irish Grand National favourite could be Thedevilscoachman, with Panda Boy, Angel’s Dawn, Stumptown and Tenzing all challenging for the favourites berth.

Looking for previous runs at Fairyhouse is another positive with 12 of the last 19 Irish National winners having tasted the track in the past. Your fancy doesn’t have had to have won at the Irish course, but just run there in the past.

Again, this is likely to be a trend that most of the 2023 Irish Grand National runners will tick, but having knocked out a fair few with the weight stat, you may find one or two more to put a line through.

Don’t Be Put Off Backing a Bigger-Priced Horse

Punters are often drawn to the head of the market in most horse races, but with a big field – don’t be afraid to look a bit further down the betting.

Only two years ago we had a stonking 150/1 winner of the race, while last year Lord Lariat returned 40/1.

In fact, 15 of the last 19 winners returned a double-figure (or triple) price! While the average winning SP in the last 19 runnings is 12/1.

Only Three of The Last 19 Winners Won Last Time Out

Another thing a lot of horse racing punters will look for is coming into a race off the back of a win. Yes, in a lot of races this is a plus, but in the Irish National only three of the last 19 winners came into the race having won last time out.

Horses, like Thedevilscoachman, Angels Dawn and Espanito Bello, if they run, are all horses that won last time out.

Trainer Dermot A McLoughlin Has Won the Last Two Irish Grand Nationals

In recent years, the Irish Grand National has been won by many different yards. Willie Mullins took the prize in 2019 for the first time, while Gordon Elliott broke his duck in 2018.

The Dermot A McLoughlin has mopped up the last two runnings with Freewheelin Dylan at 150/1 and Lord Lariat at 40/1.

However the County Meath handler has been denied the chance of a famous treble with his intended runners – Lord Lariat and The Echo Boy failing to make the race.
