Penn State football recruiting: 10 thoughts on commits, targets before signing day

Penn State's recruiting class is ranked 12th nationally and second in the Big Ten. 22 players are committed. They will sign their national letters of intent on Wednesday. Five days later, the team will fly to California and prepare for the Rose Bowl.

Kaveion Keys, Tony Rojas and Ta’Mere Robinson are the latest recruits to commit to Penn State. They are all four-star prospects from Virginia. Penn Staters signed Abdul Carter last cycle.

Conrad Hussey is the most important player who hasn't committed to Penn State yet. Husseys' high school teammate King Mack is set to sign with Penn. Daniel Harris is a four-star prospect from Miami's Gulliver Prep.

Joseph Mupoyi and Mason Robinson are Penn State's new defensive ends. Nick Tarburton announced he's not coming back for a sixth season. Adisa Isaac is still mulling his NFL decision. Rodney McGraw and Davon Townley are in the transfer portal.  Dani Dennis-Sutton played at McDonogh School (Md).

Cameron Wallace is a running back who visited Penn State in November and Georgia Tech this past weekend. Penn Staters have London Montgomery and Keyvone Lee as their top backs. Caziah Holmes and Devyn Ford left the program before they really broke out.

Jaxon Smolik will enroll at Penn State in January. Drew Allar and Beau Pribula were the newcomers last January, and Christian Veilleux is transferring to Pitt. It will be a critical offseason for all three quarterbacks under Mike Yurcich.

Penn State has a stacked offensive line. Drew Shelton, Vega Ioane, J’ven Williams, Alex Birchmeier and Mathias Barnwell are the top offensive linemen. Phil Trautwein has left a good impression on the players he's already here and those set to sign. The Nittany Lions are already off to a strong start in the 2024 cycle with an early commitment from Cooper Cousins of Erie, Pa.

Carmelo Taylor is the only wide receiver pledge for Penn State. The Nittany Lions signed five receivers in 2022. They would like to sign another one via the transfer portal.

Barnwell could be the first player to commit to Penn State. Birchmeier committed in July 2021.

Penn State could sign two pairs of high school teammates in Hussey and Mack of Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas and Zion Tracy and Mupoyi of Connecticut”s Saint Thomas More. For the fourth time in the past five cycles, Penn State will sign a player from McDonogh School.

Riley Thompson, a transfer punter from FAU, announced his commitment to Penn State on Saturday night. The Nittany Lions are not in line to sign a scholarship specialist in this class. They signed punters Alex Bacchetta and Sander Sahaydak in 2022 and 2021.

The transfer portal has been good to Penn State with specialists like Jordan Stout and Barney Amor. Penn Staters will supplement their scholarship players with an incoming transfer who can help right away. The transfer is good for all positions.
