In the first national college football poll this season, Texas A&M is ranked No. 23. You could say it’s a big step down after the Aggies were ranked No. 7 in last year’s preseason AP Top 25 or you could say coach Jimbo Fisher’s program is taking shape with another lofty ranking.

Below, we analyze the 2023 betting markets for Texas A&M and make a few predictions, including a Texas A&M win total pick.

2023 Texas A&M win total prop: Under 8.5 wins (-180 or better)

The Aggies’ Over/Under for wins currently is 8.5. Unless you’re Georgia, Alabama or LSU, 9+ wins in the SEC is a big number.

If you’re Texas A&M coming off a 5-7 season, 9+ wins might feel impossible.

There are three should-be locks on the Texas A&M schedule — New Mexico, University of Louisiana-Monroe and Abilene Christian.

The rest of the schedule is SEC-rough, including home games against Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina and Mississippi State.

The road schedule is difficult -- at Miami (Fla.) in a nonconference game, Arkansas (in neutral Arlington, Texas), Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU.

If Texas A&M wins the locks and three of four SEC games at home (no easy task), that leaves the Aggies needing to win three difficult road games to reach nine victories.

Last season, Texas A&M had a porous defense and an inconsistent offense.

Speedy five-star recruit Rueben Owens is being counted on to revitalize the Aggies, who also have a strong offensive line.

Texas A&M also had difficulty winning close games. The Aggies were 1-5 last year in games decided by 6 points or less.

If you’re interested in betting on Texas A&M, consider the Under. The Aggies’ schedule is simply too difficult and the talent is too unproven.

Texas A&M College Football Playoff odds: (+4000 or better)

Texas A&M’s current odds to win the national championship is +4000, the 14th-best odds in the country.

Four SEC teams have better odds: Georgia (+225), Alabama (+600), LSU (+1200) and Tennessee (+3500).

A Texas A&M bet on winning the national championship is an extreme long shot, especially with so many strong teams in the SEC.

One point to consider: Texas A&M has never won the SEC West or an SEC title since joining the league in 2012. That doesn’t mean the Aggies can’t win this year, but they have a lot of history working against them.
