2023 Wells Fargo Championship Picks & Odds: Rory Favored at Quail Hallow

Rory McIlroy's chase for the major championship grand slam fell well short last month but he's back and playing a course he's enjoyed a ton of success on over his career. We break down his chances in our full Wells Fargo Championship odds below.

It's been almost a month since we've seen Rory McIlroy play golf following a missed cut at Augusta National, but there may not be a better spot on the calendar for him to return.

The World No. 3 is a three-time Wells Fargo Championship winner at Quail Hollow Country Club and as such, is sitting comfortably atop the golf odds board this week.

We break down his chances and more in our Wells Fargo Championship betting preview below, including outright odds, free golf picks, and more.

Wells Fargo Championship picks and predictions

Jason Day Top 20 (+138 at Unibet)

It’s been a month since the Aussie finished a mere T39 at Augusta National, but he was actually in line for another great week prior to an 8-over final round. Even so, that result marked his worst — by quite a margin — since the RSM Classic back in November.

The seven events in between are made up entirely of Top-20 finishes with five Top 10s along the way. He’s playing consistently great golf for the first time since the first half of the 2018-19 season.

Just a few months prior to that stretch of golf in 2018-19 came a win right here at the Wells Fargo, where he won by two shots and fired off four sub-70 rounds. That win also followed a T9 at the Quail Hollow-held PGA Championship in 2017.

Everything in Day’s play this season points to a return to vintage form and an addition to his already inspiring Quail Hallow resume seems right in line with that trend.

Jordan Spieth over Justin Thomas (-110 at bet365)

While Justin Thomas won the PGA here in 2017, there are too many signs pointing toward his good buddy this week.

Spieth doesn’t have an extensive history here at Quail Hollow (T28 at 2017 PGA, T32 at 2013 Wells Fargo), but a 5-0 stint at the Presidents Cup last September should have him more than ready to build on his run of strong finishes over the last two months.

He’s gone 2-T4-T3-T19-T4 in his last five stroke-play starts, resulting in a perfect 5-0 head-to-head record against Thomas. JT isn’t playing badly per se, but Spieth is a tough cookie to crack when his putter is working as it is (he gained strokes putting in each of those five starts) and is routinely working his way into contention.

Spieth has the edge in this friendly affair, and I expect more of the same this week.

Odds to win 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

Wells Fargo Championship field and favorites

All eyes will be on Rory McIlroy as he makes his first start back since a disappointing missed cut at the Masters. On top of the wins in 2010, 2015, and 2021, Rory has piled up six other Top 10s here at the Wells Fargo (some played on other courses) and enters the week a clear +750 betting favorite.

Aside from Rory, the top tier of the odds board is lined with Patrick Cantlay (+1,300), Xander Schauffele (+1,400), and Tony Finau (+1,500) — who enters the week hot after winning the Mexico Open over the weekend (his second win of the season).

Two-time champion Max Homa is on the board at +2,200, while 2018 winner Jason Day sits at +2,500 after a strong start to the 2023 season.
