2023 Wyndham Championship Betting Picks

About the Tournament

The PGA TOUR regular season concludes with the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. The course is a par-70 layout that measures 7,131 yards and is designed by Donald Ross.

Just like last week at the 3M Open, motivation to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs will be a factor with the top 70 players in the standings advancing to the first playoff event next week in Memphis. Last year, the top 125 players made it to Memphis, so there’s a much smaller pool this season.

Top of the Board

The top of the oddsboard is very condensed with no player shorter than 20/1, and 10 players are priced between 20/1 and 33/1.

Russell Henley (20/1) to win is one of four outright bets I made on Monday morning. Henley has finished ninth, seventh and fifth in the last three years at Sedgefield CC. Last year, he ranked first in the field in strokes gained approach and is consistently a strong iron player. Henley has put together a strong 2023 that was highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the Masters.

Shane Lowry (33/1) will be one of the more motivated players this week, as he needs a very good showing to have his PGA TOUR season continue. The Irishman is 76th in the FedEx Cup standings, so he’s in striking distance of getting invited to Memphis. Lowry has had a strong season with his irons, but is often letdown by bad putting. He has also had past success at the RBC Heritage, which is at a comparable course to Sedgefield.

Mid-range Targets

Cam Davis (40/1) is another player with work to do to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Australian helped his cause at the 3M Open when he finished tied for 10th to climb from 77th to 69th. Davis is a big hitter that won at a Donald Ross-designed course two years ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

He’s also played well at shorter courses like Sedgefield, including 22nd- and 15th-place finishes at the 2019 and 2020 Wyndham Championships, respectively. He also has finished in the top seven at RBC Heritage the last two years.

Stephan Jaeger (40/1) has strung together a strong enough season to be sitting at 64th in the FedEx Cup standings. Jaeger has consistently made the cut and his best finish was ninth at the Rocket Mortgage last month. He’s coming off a strong ball-striking week at the 3M Open and finished 13th last year in Greensboro. If Jaeger can putt slightly better, he will be in contention on Sunday.

Longshots

Chesson Hadley (100/1) is a North Carolina native that has played this event every year since 2012. His tied-for-eighth finish last year was his best showing, and he ranked fourth in the field in strokes gained approach. Hadley has struggled for most of 2023 but has shown some life lately making the cut in four of his last five starts. He finished tied for 27th this past week in Minnesota and ranked third in the field in approach. I’ll play the home state narrative on Hadley and hope he can continue to trend upward at this event.
