2024 MLB odds, predictions: San Francisco Giants boost playoff odds with Blake Snell signing

The Giants bolstered their playoff chances by signing Blake Snell on Monday, but they remain big-time long shots to come out on top of the National League West.

The Giants upped their preseason win total from 81.5 to 83.5 and shortened their playoff odds from +175 to +150 at BetMGM Sportsbook by adding Snell, who will form one of the best 1-2 starting pitching combos in baseball alongside Logan Webb.

The franchise’s busy offseason, which also saw them add Matt Chapman, Jung Ho Lee, Jorge Soler, Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks, wasn’t enough to put a dent in their arch-rival Dodgers’ handle on the NL West, at least according to oddsmakers.

The Dodgers remain a -550 favorite to win the NL West, the best preseason divisional odds of any team in baseball.

San Francisco’s various moves have helped them move up the pecking order in the division though, despite being given little chance at the top spot.

In mid-February, the Giants were as low as +1400 to win the NL West — which was a step behind fellow contenders in the Diamondbacks and Padres.

They have now moved past both teams, sitting at +1000 at BetMGM as of Tuesday evening.

The Giants helped shorten their World Series odds from +5000 to +4500 and NL pennant odds from +2500 to +2300 post-Snell signing.

Snell, the defending NL Cy Young winner, immediately slots in as one of the best No. 2 starters in the league.

He has the eighth-best odds (+1800, FanDuel Sportsbook) to repeat as the NL Cy Young winner.

Webb, the Giants’ Opening Day starter, has the third-best odds (+1100).

The pair aren’t the only Giants expected to compete for some end-of-season hardware.

Lee, San Francisco’s new center fielder, currently has the second-best odds (+600, BetMGM) to win the NL Rookie of the Year, trailing Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+175).
