28 Line Up In Coral Stewards Cup

The Coral Stewards’ Cup (16h35), a Heritage Handicap, is Saturday’s feature race at Glorious Goodwood.

A maximum field of 28 will scorch the Sussex turf over the straight six-furlongs.

Track conditions are likely to be good to soft with rain forecast early Saturday morning.

With the stands rail favoured on soft ground, I am leaning towards three runners drawn high.

The admirable veteran Summerghand landed this in 2020 and coming from stall 23 may help him double up with another victory.

He was slow away at Ascot behind Saint Lawrence in the Wokingham, but ran on late to finish five lengths back, just under three lengths behind Saturday’s race favourite Orazio. Summerghand loves some cut in the ground and is currently quoted at around 16/1.

Mr Wagyu is another course and distance winner who ran a fair race in the Wokingham finishing a head behind favourite Orazio in seventh. Drawn midfield in 14 for inform John Quinn yard, he must be considered at 14/1.

Finally, Apollo One deserves a mention at odds of 14/1. A length runner-up in the Wokingham, the five-year-old is drawn near the rail (27) and this consistent sort could finally be rewarded on Saturday afternoon with regular rider Richard Kingscote aboard.

Earlier on the card, Frankie Dettori could ride his final winner at the Glorious Goodwood festival aboard the Gosden trained Free Wind in the Gr2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (16h00).

Eight fillies and mares contest over a mile and three-quarters, and Dettori’s mount, a course winner, has the best form on offer being a Group 2 winner.

The five-year-old mare carries a penalty for that success but is lightly raced and will enjoy going up in trip and down in grade after a flat run in the Hardwicke at the royal meeting.

Peripatetic, a course winner from the Varian yard, could outrun her odds and finish in the placings.
