Glorious Goodwood: Stewards’ Cup 2023 tips and odds

The Stewards’ Cup takes place on Saturday, August 5 – the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood. The 6f heritage handicap contest dates back to 1840 and it is open to three-year-olds and above.

In 2022, Commanche Falls won the race for the second consecutive year, becoming just one of six horses that have won the Stewards’ Cup more than once. (No horse has won it three times or more.) Michael Dods’ runner now has an official rating of 112 and is contesting group races.

Tiber Flow is the highest-rated runner among this year’s entries. William Haggas’s sprinter won the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle this month and he will be bidding to concede weight to the rest of the field at Goodwood.

King’s Lynn, the winner of the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock last season, is another notable entry. He has a mark of 107 and will carry the silks of King Charles III should he feature.

Orazio has the class to win

One of the most lightly raced runners in this year’s Stewards’ Cup field is ORAZIO, a colt trained by Charles Hills. The Lambourn trainer won this race in 2015 with Magical Memory and his latest entry has a similar profile to the former winner.

The son of Caravaggio is a well-bred colt who was in excellent form at the start of the season. He prevailed at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance, scoring in a 6f contest by a length after a late surge to the front of the field.

Hills’ runner defied a 4lb rise in the ratings to successfully follow up at Ascot over the same trip. He looked much fitter on that occasion, getting the job done quite comfortably by just over two lengths.

Connections opted to take their chance in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. He did not fare badly in a large field, finishing sixth of 27 runners. That will have proved to be a valuable experience for the sprinter on what was just his seventh career outing.

The four-year-old will get another go off this mark of 102. If he steps up on his Wokingham run, it could be enough to land this valuable prize.

Apollo One on a mission

Although he has yet to score this season, APOLLO ONE has had an excellent campaign. The sprinter has finished in the frame in three valuable handicaps and his connections will have been delighted with the consistency their horse has shown.

On his latest run, Apollo One was second behind Saint Lawrence in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was first of 17 runners on his side of the track from what was probably not the best draw. The five-year-old is now 3lb better off at the weights with the winner as he bids to reverse the form.

Unlike many of the runners with entries in the Stewards’ Cup, Apollo One is not ground-dependent. He has run well in races with firm and soft somewhere in the going description this season, so if rain falls or if it remains dry during the meeting, it will not impact his chances of success in this race.
