7/5/23 MLB Picks and Prediction

The Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres will conclude their interleague series this Wednesday from Petco Park. San Diego took game two in humbling fashion, 8-5.

Angels Betting Preview

Los Angeles moved to 45-43 after losing to San Diego. The Angels were bullied in game two, and they’ll look to somehow avoid the sweep here with a Freeway Series looming this weekend. The LAA offense is scoring 4.16 runs per game, while batting .252, with a .331 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.33 ERA, with a 1.27 WHIP. Shohei Ohtani had a tough start yesterday, but he still leads the AL in home runs (31), with team-leads in hits (99), batting (.300) and RBI (68). Mike Trout’s been ruled out for at least a month after picking up an injury in game one, and that might end up telling the story in Anaheim this season prematurely. Brandon Drury is also on the injured list, leaving another hole in the LAA lineup. Hunter Renfroe supplied a home run in the game two loss, and he’s posting splits of .249/15/41.

Pablo Sandoval (4-7, 4.57 ERA, 65 Ks) will make the road start for Los Angeles. The fifth-year flamethrower has struggled loudly over the last six weeks, and it’s cost the Halos. Sandoval lost his final three outings in May, before carrying that poor form into the month of June, and dropping three of his five starts. Sandoval allowed a season-high seven runs in five innings to the White Sox last time out, and he’ll look to turn things around this month.

Padres Betting Preview

San Diego moved to 38-45 after defeating Los Angeles. The Padres have turned things up at the plate over the past couple of weeks, and they’ll look to complete the sweep Wednesday. The San Diego offense is scoring 4.31 runs per game, while batting .228, with a .317 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.76 ERA, with a 1.23 WHIP. Fernando Tatis plated three runs in the game one victory, and he leads the Pads in batting (.281) and home runs (16), with 44 RBI. Juan Soto has collected a hit in seven of the last ten games, and he’s hitting .274, with a team-lead 47 RBI, with 15 homers. Manny Machado has multiple hits in three of the last four games, and he’s posting splits of .254/11/38. Xander Bogaerts have homered in both matchups with the Angels, and he’s posting an identical line of .263/10/34.

Seth Lugo (3-4, 3.59 ERA, 36 K) is set to start for San Diego. The eighth-year righty pitched well in Cincinnati last week, striking out six in six scoreless innings against the surging Reds. Lugo didn’t earn the win, but he bounced back from his fourth loss, and he’ll look to wrap things up strong for the Padres Wednesday.

Anaheim vs San Diego Trends

LA Angels are 42-40 against the spread this season, with a 46-34-4 O/U record. San Diego is 40-45 ATS this year, with a 38-47 over/under record.

Corey’s Free Pick

The Angels have inadvertently had their hot stretch of play wrecked by the NL West, and things may get a bit worse here. LAA has gone 2-8 against the division since a memorable series victory over the Rangers, and with the Dodgers set to host them this weekend, they might end up dropping back below .500. The Halos will trot out a volatile Pablo Sandoval, who will likely continue to struggle here against a potent Padres lineup, and this contest feels like it will end with a series sweep. Back San Diego to take game three.
