Reds vs Angels Prediction
The Los Angeles Angels and the Cincinnati Reds will meet in Anaheim for game one of their interleague set this Tuesday from Angel Stadium.
Reds Preview & Projected Starter
Cincinnati moved to 64-61 after dropping two of three to Toronto. The Reds were blitzed early in the series finale, and they’ll look to avoid falling further from the NL Wild Card picture this week. The Cincinnati offense is scoring 3.78 runs per game, while batting .257, with a .334 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.96 ERA, with a 1.46 WHIP.
Graham Ashcraft (6-8, 4.89 ERA, 50 Ks) will get the call for Cincinnati. The second-year pitcher held his own in a battle of Ohio with Cleveland, only allowing three runs through seven innings pitched, but he’d end up taking the losing decision. Ashcraft has been pretty good since returning in late June, as eight of his last nine outings have resulted in quality starts, and he’s held clubs to two runs or less in seven of those. Ashcraft’s last trip to Southern Cal went pretty well, as he tossed six scoreless frames in a win over the Dodgers, and he’ll look to replicate that effort here against the Angels.

• Spencer Steer plated a run in all three matchups with LAD, and he leads the team in hits (119), home runs (18), with 66 RBI.
• Matt McClain has recorded a hit in six of the last nine games, and he leads Cincy in batting (.296), with 44 RBI.
• Elly De La Cruz has reached base in seven of the previous nine games, and he’s batting .257, with 45 runs scored thru 63 games.
• TJ Freidl has collected a hit in four of the last six games, and he’s second on the team in batting (.274) and hits (100).
Angels Preview & Projected Starter
Los Angeles moved to 61-64 after dropping two of three to Tampa. The Angels were embarrassed at home in the series finale, and they’ll look to redeem themselves here in Tuesday. The LAA offense is scoring 4.16 runs per game, while batting .257, with a .333 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.43 ERA, with a 1.36 WHIP.
Lucas Giolito (7-9, 4.44 ERA, 108 Ks) will get the call for LAA. The eighth-year righty fell back into the loss column after having a tough time in Texas last week, allowing four runs in six innings to the Rangers. Giolito has yet to bring any form of stability to the Angels rotation through five starts, and he’ll look to turn things around against Cincy here.

• Shonei Ohtani has reocrded a hit in ten of the last thirteen games, and he’s first in the AL in home runs (43), while leading LAA in hits (140) and RBI (89), while batting .306.
• Brandon Drury will look to keep things going against his former team after totaling multiple bases in all three matchups against Tampa, and he’s posting splits of .269/17/54.
• Mike Moustakas has recorded a hit in four of the last five games, and he’s posting a line of .272/11/42.
• Hunter Renfroe homered in the series finale versus the Rays, and he’s second on the team in RBI (52), with eighteen home runs.
• Mike Trout is set to return this week at some point, and he’ll bring splits of .263/18/44 with him.

These two clubs have been bullied outside of the playoff picture since returning from the All-Star break, but with the youth-led Reds still very much alive, I believe they’ll come into this manageable series swinging. Cincy lies just one game back of the final Wild Card spot, while also being locked into a three-team race for the NL Central crown, so they can’t take any remaining games for granted. In return, the Angels are going to bring the fight per usual, and with Mike Trout set to return for this final stretch, there will be some optimism in the Angels clubhouse this week. I like targeting the total for this interleague matchup with positive offensive trends for both clubs, so let’s back the Over for game one.
