Carlos Santana went off and powered the game one victory with two home runs, and he’s now up 11 homers and 50 RBI for the season. San Diego moved to 48-53 after falling to Pittsburgh. The Padres were pushed around by the Pirates Monday night, and they’ll look to respond here in game two. San Diego offense is scoring 4.31 runs per game, while batting .228, with a .317 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.76 ERA, with a 1.23 WHIP. Juan Soto went hitless in the game one loss, but he still leads the Pads in home runs (19) and RBI (57). Fernando Tatis also failed to reach base on Monday night, but he leads the Pads in batting (.284) and hits (93), with 17 home runs and 50 RBI. Manny Machado was the only member of the big three to record a hit against Pittsburgh, and he’s posting splits of .255/18/54. Xander Bogaerts has collected a hit in nine of the last ten games.
Blake Snell (6-8, 2.67 ERA, 143 Ks) will take the mound for San Diego. The eighth-year pitcher came back to earth last week in Toronto, walking seven batters in five innings en route to his eighth loss. Snell only allowed one run, so it wasn’t a blown up start by any means, and he comes into an ideal spot at home here versus the Pirates. Snell tossed ten Ks in Pittsburgh in late June, and he’s cleared double figures in five of his last eight outings.
