Aces vs Liberty Prediction, Odds & Picks for Today (8/6)

The highlight of Sunday’s WNBA schedule sees the league’s top two teams, the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty, face off for the second time this season, this time at Barclays Center (3:00 pm ET, ABC).

Will we see a different result than their first encounter of the season? On June 29, the Liberty visited Michelob Ultra Arena and were sent away with a 98-81 loss.

Will a change of venue make a difference in the outcome? Or will the Aces make a big statement in Brooklyn?

Aces Seek Ninth Straight Double-Digit Victory

Since their loss in Vegas, the Liberty have won 11 of 13 games and enter their rematch with the Aces on a three-game win streak.

Of the 12 teams in the WNBA, 11 would likely be pretty happy overall if they went 11-2 over a 13-game span.

The lone team that wouldn’t is the Aces, as two losses would match their total for the entire season to date. Since their win over the Liberty, the Aces have won 10 of 11, and they are riding an eight-game win streak going into their rematch with New York.

In this ongoing streak, the defending WNBA champions have won each game by at least 12 points and are averaging 98.6 points per game. That number may be a normal body temperature for a human, but there is nothing normal about what the Aces are doing right now.

Can the Liberty provide at least a speed bump? They at least won’t have to contend with Candace Parker, who had 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the first meeting.

But each of the Aces’ other four starters scored at least 14 points, and Las Vegas finished with 32 assists–five short of the WNBA single-game record–and only seven turnovers.

It was a seven-point game at halftime, but the Aces put the result beyond doubt by outscoring the Liberty 27-14 in the third quarter.

Current WNBA Playoff Standings (Through August 5)

  1. Las Vegas Aces 24-2
  2. New York Liberty 21-6
  3. Connecticut Sun 20-7
  4. Dallas Wings 15-12
  5. Atlanta Dream 14-13
  6. Washington Mystics 13-13
  7. Minnesota Lynx 13-15
  8. Chicago Sky 11-15

There’s certainly no shame in losing to this Aces team, which may be on course for the best season in WNBA history.

How do Breanna Stewart and the Liberty bridge that gap? A big game by Stewart wouldn’t hurt.

In the first meeting, she had only 16 points (6 of 15 FG). Will she deliver this time? She has yet to go three consecutive games without scoring 20+ points, so a big game could be on the horizon following 16 and 17-point performances in her last two games.

Somehow keeping the Aces under 85 points wouldn’t hurt either. This season, the Liberty are just 5-5 when they have allowed 85 or more points, and they were taken to overtime in two of the wins.

The Connecticut Sun and Dallas Wings were able to hold the Aces to 78 and 77, respectively, so it’s not impossible. But when it has happened only four times all season and in less than 27% of the Aces’ regular season games since 2020, the Liberty have a real task on their hands.

Aces vs Liberty Picks: Aces -5.5 (-105 at Bovada) & Aces/Liberty over 176.5 (-110 at Bovada)

The Liberty are a very, very good team. There’s a reason why they are 21-6 this season, and this might be this season’s WNBA Finals matchup.

But the Aces are on another planet right now, and I don’t see the Liberty being able to get the job done, even if they are at home this time around.
