Football is all about scoring these days. From ‘08 through ’18 Alabama allowed an average of just under 13 points per game.
That is basically impossible. From ’19-’22 the average has been about 19 per game, still quite good by today’s standards. This year’s squad looks even better.

Alabama Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH
Alabama must replace Bryce Young. I’m not sure who will ultimately win the job, but we may see a decrease in accuracy, and should see an increase in turnovers.
RB Gibbs was here just one year (whatever Alabama wants, Alabama gets). The RB group is younger now, and I’m projecting a “decrease”, to 5.3 per carry. Ten players were drafted overall, with six leaving defensively.
The area hardest hit was LB. They lose their top five tacklers, but players are waiting in the wings, and the #’s may not drop. There’s a new special team coordinator, but he’ll inherit a real strong unit.
Alabama Football2023 Predictions, Alabama Schedule:
Texas could have won a year ago. Alabama has been nearly unbeatable at home under Saban, so the rematch favors the Tide, although it will be a great test for their somewhat rebuilt defense.
There are a total of FIVE great tests for the defense, all in home games. The others are OL Miss, Arkansas (great backfield), Tennessee and LSU.
The SEC schedule isn’t easy, and also includes road games at A&M (upset win for the Aggies here in ’21), Kentucky (last there in ’13, Mark Stoops’ 1st year) and at Auburn (new coach Freese has multiple wins in the series, and Auburn has won three of the last five as a host).
Alabama Football Bottom Line:
Not being in the final four seems like a disaster for this program. While never wise to bet against them, this is a somewhat tricky schedule.
Let’s call it 11-1, and another playoff appearance, but if new offensive coordinator Rees disappoints, or they miss their LB’s more than expected, a playoff invitation is not a guarantee. My SEC grid is much closer to 10-2.
Alabama Football HANDICAPPING TIP:
Nick Saban doesn’t always respond well after a loss (5-11 vs. the spread). Rush data tends to work in their games. I’ll start with those two facts in mind, but I expect to tread carefully in their games right now.
