One of the very few low points of an otherwise outstanding season for Arsenal was their defeat by Everton at Goodison Park on February 4. The 1-0 loss, then only their second of the campaign, came on Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of the Toffees after he had been chosen to replace the sacked Frank Lampard.

Mikel Arteta’s men cannot afford a similar slip-up on Wednesday as they look to continue their title charge. A win here, in their game in hand on Man City, would open up a five-point gap with 13 games left to play.

To date, the Gunners have handled the pressure of City snapping at their heels well, as demonstrated at the weekend when they expertly negotiated a tricky-looking trip to Leicester. A tight game of few chances was won 1-0 thanks to a Gabriel Martinelli goal early in the second half.

For Everton, their season of struggle continues. The initial Dyche ‘bounce’ looks to have subsided and their 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa at the weekend was a bitter blow to their hopes of survival.

As a result of the Villa defeat, the Toffees dropped into the bottom three. With just five wins from their 24 games and only 17 goals scored all season, they are in danger of being relegated from the top tier for the first time since 1951.

It’s not been a great season for either of the Merseyside ‘giants’ as, at the other end of Stanley Park, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds also continue to falter. There will be no title battle for Liverpool; instead, their battle will be to sneak into the fourth Champions League qualifying spot. They currently lie in seventh place.

At the weekend, Liverpool could only manage a goalless draw away at Crystal Palace – a result that left them nine points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham – and the pressure is growing on Klopp as his Class of 2023 continues to stumble and under-perform.
