Astros vs. Rangers prediction and odds for Tuesday, Sept. 5 (Can Texas bounce back?)

The Houston Astros picked up a much-needed win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night, riding a four-hit, two-homer game from Jose Altuve.

It’s a disappointing loss for Texas, who is really trending down in the playoff race in the American League, sitting just half a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for the final wild card spot.

Houston is now tied atop the AL West with the Seattle Mariners, and it has a chance to distance itself from Texas in the division race.

Astros lefty Framber Valdez gets the ball in this game against Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who is off the injured list and making his first appearance since July 18. How will Eovaldi fare in his return?

Here’s a look at the odds and my best bet for this AL West showdown:

Eovaldi was in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career before going down, and he posted a gem against the Astros (seven innings of two-hit ball) back on July 1.

I don’t mind taking a shot on him in this game, especially since Valdez is coming off a brutal month of August.

The Houston ace threw a no-hitter in his first start of the month, but then proceeded to allow six, four, six, zero and four runs in his next five starts. He finished the month with a 4.68 ERA and 4.94 FIP in his final five starts. His season ERA rose from 3.07 after the no-hitter to 3.38.

Eovaldi has just four starts this season where he allowed more than three earned runs, and I think he can compete with Valdez in this game.

If the Texas offense shows up, the Rangers could steal the second game of this series.
