Bayern Munich vs Manchester United predictions

Manchester United are undoubtedly one of the biggest football clubs in the world, just like their upcoming opponents. But their achievements over the last decade are not befitting of their status.

It is well known that United have not won the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Yet they have also failed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for 12 years.

The last time they did so was in 2011, when United went on to finish as runners-up to Barcelona after being dismantled by Pep Guardiola’s sensational side at Wembley.

The stadium in north London is the venue of this season’s final too, but even the most optimistic of the club’s supporters would struggle to envisage United getting that far as things stand.

Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a mediocre start to 2023/24 at best. Three losses in their first five matches has left them in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

United were only ever outsiders in the title race, but a deficit of nine points will be hard to make up even at this early stage of proceedings.

The Red Devils were well beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend. The most concerning thing for United is that no one was really surprised by the 3-1 away win at Old Trafford.

It is hard to discern what this team is trying to do when it gets on the pitch. There are issues in all areas, from the defence to the midfield to the attack.

The last thing United needed was a trip to Bayern Munich on matchday one of the Champions League. This is among the toughest assignments in European football and United fans will be fearing the worst.

Ten Hag’s team are yet to play well across 90 minutes this term, and Bayern are arguably the strongest opponents they have faced so far.

Anything is possible in football, but the evidence of the last few weeks suggests this could be a long, hard evening for United.

📝 Bayern Munich vs Manchester United betting tips

Bayern Munich are not the perfect team by any means, but they should have too much quality for Manchester United here.

Bayern Munich -1 handicap - 13/10 (bet365)

Bayern Munich are usually such a well-run club that it was jarring to see them scrambling around for a holding midfielder at the end of the summer transfer window.

Having belatedly turned their attention to Joao Palhinha, Bayern were left red-faced when Fulham pulled the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour.

Thomas Tuchel was furious at the club’s failure to secure the Portuguese’s services, which has left Bayern with a glaring hole at the back of midfield.

Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are likely to start in a double pivot on Wednesday, but Tuchel has made clear that he does not see either player as a natural No.6.

It is a weakness Bayern will have to rectify in January, but it should not cause them too much trouble in the group stage of the Champions League.

Given the mess United are in, it is hard to see anything other than a comfortable home win in this one.

A one-goal triumph for Bayern would see your stake returned, while a wider margin of victory would make this bet successful.

Second half higher scoring - 20/21 (bet365)

Ten Hag will have spent the last few days trying to rally his troops ahead of the trip to Munich.

He has no doubt told his players that everyone has written them off in an attempt to create a siege mentality.

It is unlikely to work. Bayern Munich are in much better shape than Manchester United right now. Despite the aforementioned midfield issue, they are a more rounded team with superior quality at the back and in attack.

United could have some success in the first half, however, provided they do not concede in the first quarter of an hour. Ten Hag would almost certainly settle for going in at the break at 0-0.

Bayern have scored seven second-half goals in the Bundesliga so far this season, compared to four before the interval.

United will tire as the game wears on and the German champions should have more space in the second 45 minutes.

Harry Kane to score any time - 5/6 (bet365)

Who else?

Harry Kane was linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer, but there is no suggestion that the Red Devils came close to submitting a bid.

That surprised many, although Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy would have been reluctant to sell his most prized asset to a Premier League rival.

Kane has made a solid start to life in Bavaria, notching four goals in his first four Bundesliga appearances.

United have been poor defensively so far in 2023/24 and Kane should get plenty of chances to find the net.

Quite frankly it would be a surprise if the ex-Spurs sharp-shooter did not make his mark against United at the Allianz Arena this week.
