While New Yorkers have differing opinions on the baseball teams they root for, both fanbases feel disappointment regarding their team’s performances this season.

Despite having the highest payroll in baseball, thanks to owner Steve Cohen, the Mets are 46-53 and trail the Atlanta Braves by a whopping 18.5 games in the NL East standings. Fans were hopeful for a miraculous turnaround after the All-Star break, but the team is 4-5 in the second half of the season, losing two straight games coming into the Subway Series.

The Yankees have MLB’s second-highest payroll and hold a 53-47 record. However, the AL East is loaded with talented teams, and the Yanks, trailing the first-place Baltimore Orioles by nine games, are tied for fourth in the division.

The Yankees’ best shot at a playoff berth is via a wild card slot, currently trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 2.5 games.

The Bronx Bombers exited the All-Star break looking sluggish, losing five of its opening six games. Heading into tonight’s matchup with its crosstown rivals, hope is reigniting for the Yankees, thanks to a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

The two-time Silver Slugger is known for smashing the long ball, but that hasn’t been the case this year. Giancarlo Stanton has missed 50 games due to injury, hitting just 13 home runs in 50 games.

But Stanton is starting to heat up, as he’s cranked a dinger in two of his last four outings.

The Yankees power hitter also has familiarity with Mets starter Justin Verlander. In 14 at-bats, Stanton has hit two home runs against Verlander.

Verlander’s command was off the charts in his last start, walking just one batter and striking out seven in eight innings pitched. The former MVP has allowed a single walk in two of his previous four starts.

The 40-year-old diced up the Yankees earlier this season in the Mets’ 4-3 victory. Verlander tossed a six-inning three-hitter, tallying six strikeouts and zero walks. Look for another dominant performance from the Mets ace.

Gleyber Torres has smacked a hit in 13 straight games, six of which were multi-hit performances. Torres is also riding a three-game RBI streak entering the Subway Series.

Facing Verlander poses another advantage for Gleyber, as he’s batting .275 against right-handed pitchers this season. That’s .056 higher than his .219 average against Southpaws.
