Hammering looks out of the question

West Ham are favourites to win the Europa Conference League but Gent proved in the first leg they are no easy opposition.

The Belgians looked the side more likely to score again towards the end of last week’s match and will provide another tough test.

Last week’s match was the first of 11 Europa Conference League games that West Ham have not won this season and we expect them to return to winning ways this evening.

The Hammers have kept just one clean sheet in their past five games and have none at all in their last three at home.

Gent have scored in their past four away from home and put four past Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey in the previous round so adding both teams to score creates some nice value.

Bowen the man in Europe

It is no secret that West Ham have missed having a consistent striker this season but while Jarrod Bowen has not quite hit the heights of last term, he has still performed well.

The England forward has four goals in seven Europa Conference League appearances this season, including two against AEK Larnaca at home in the previous round. And he also netted in the play-off round of the competition.

Bowen scored West Ham’s crucial equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the weekend to prove his form, and if the Hammers are to progress to the semi-finals you would expect Bowen to play a major role and find the net.

Piatkwoski exposed again

Kamil Piatkowski was actually shown a red card in the first leg before VAR overturned the decision and his challenge on Lucas Paqueta towards the end was deemed not a foul.

The 22-year-old had already been shown a yellow for a foul on Said Benrahma and he found West Ham’s quality difficult to deal with at times.

In the league this season, Piatkowski averages over a foul a game and he only won seven of his 11 duels last week. With West Ham boasting an attack that will feature Bowen, Danny Ings and Benrahma again, the centre-back may struggle once again.
