Hammers can prevent an upset

Bristol City’s draw at West Ham was one of the standout performances of the FA Cup third round but they are unlikely to go one better and produce an upset this evening.

Tommy Conway earned the Robins a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium but according to the stats, West Ham produced 1.43xG to 0.66 for the visitors.

David Moyes’ side won the Europa Conference League last season and are into the round of 16 in the Europa League. They have the cup pedigree and the quality to overcome the Championship side who are winless in their last four and lost 2-0 to Preston North End at the weekend.

The Hammers come into this one with a 2-0 win at title contenders Arsenal in their last away game and a weekend off thanks to the Premier League’s winter break so the signs point to a win.

Soucek the man to step up

Although we expect a win for West Ham, there are legitimate questions about where the goals will come from.

Jarrod Bowen is out injured after picking up an injury in the first match, in which he scored his side's goal, and he is joined in the treatment room by Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta, while Mohamed Kudus is at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Of the players who are fit and available for tonight’s game, Tomas Soucek is West Ham’s top scorer with eight goals in 29 matches across all competitions.

That includes the openerin that 2-0 win at the Emirates as well as the only goal in his side’s EFL Cup second-round tie against Lincoln City. The trip to Bristol City is a similar task to the one to Sincil Bank so Soucek seems a good price to find the net.

Rusty McRorie could be caught out

After signing from Aberdeen last summer, Ross McRorie finally made his Bristol City debut as a substitute against Preston at Deepdale at the weekend.

The right-back is expected to make his first start this evening as he builds his fitness back up and his lack of sharpness makes him a prime candidate for a card.

At Aberdeen last season, the 25-year-old was shown seven yellow cards in 41 matches across all competitions so he is no stranger to spelling out his name for the referee.

Said Benrahma will be McRorie’s direct opponent and while he is not having the best season, he should still have enough to cause him real problems which may result in a card.
