Blue Jays vs. Twins prediction and odds for Game 2 of AL Wild Card

The Minnesota Twins – behind the strength of two Royce Lewis home runs – snapped their 18-game losing streak in the playoffs to take Game 1 of the AL Wild Card against the Toronto Blue Jays. 

With the monkey off their back, the Twins now have a chance to advance to the ALDS against one of their former pitchers, Jose Berrios, on Wednesday. 

Berrios gets the ball for the Jays, who mustered just one run in Game 1 – a major concern since they closed out the regular season really struggling at the plate. 

Toronto will look to get the bats going against Sonny Gray, who finished the regular season with a 2.79 ERA and was lights out in September, posting a 2.00 ERA in five starts. Twins fans are certainly hoping he can carry that into the postseason.

Neither team has fared too well when these pitchers have been on the mound this season, which is surprising considering their season-long numbers. 

Despite Gray’s 2.79 ERA – supported by a 2.83 Fielding Independent Pitching – the Twins went just 14-18 in his 32 outings this season. 

Toronto wasn’t much better with Berrios on the bump, going 17-15 in his 32 starts. 

So what gives in Game 2? 

Neither team was elite on offense, but Lewis’ home runs were about as timely as they get. The Twins relied on four bullpen arms to follow Pablo Lopez, but they allowed just one hit across 3.1 innings of work. 

Outside of Bo Bichette and Kevin Kiermaier, the Jays were a combined 2-for-26 at the dish in Game 1. That’s not going to cut it, and it hasn’t been a strength of the team over the last month or so. 

I’m going to ride with Gray, who closed out the season in much stronger fashion than Berrios (4.40 ERA since Aug. 1). 

That’s right, the Twins are advancing to the ALDS!
