Jalen Milroe’s impressive performance was the biggest takeaway from Alabama’s 56-7 Week 1 victory over Middle Tennessee. Milroe completed 72% of his passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 48 yards and two scores.

Nick Saban has teased that Alabama will revert to a run-first scheme offensively, and he stuck to his word vs. the Blue Raiders. The Tide rushed the ball 40 times for 205 yards and five touchdowns, with Jase McClellan’s 39 yards ranking as the second-most behind Milroe.

Expect the Tide to deploy a similar smash-mouth style against the Longhorns on Saturday night.

Texas opened the year with a 37-10 win against Rice. Quinn Ewers led the way with 260 passing yards and three touchdowns. His top target was Xavier Worthy, who reeled in seven catches for 90 yards.

Ewers dominated the Tide in 2022, throwing for 134 yards in the first quarter before an injury ended his day early. Alabama’s defense limiting Steve Sarkisian’s prolific passing attack will be crucial for the Tide to start the 2023 season with a 2-0 record.

Starting DBs Malachi Moore and Jaylen Key were banged up in the victory over Middle Tennessee and missed practice early in the week. The pair are day-to-day ahead of a matchup with Texas in which they’ll be sorely missed if they sit or play limited snaps.

Texas has one of the best WR trios in the nation, featuring Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and Adonai Mitchell. Worthy and Whittington combined for 1,412 yards and 10 touchdowns a season ago, and Mitchell is a former five-star recruit who joined Texas via the transfer portal in the offseason.

Expect the Crimson Tide’s physical offensive attack to overwhelm the Longhorns while Ewers is successful in the passing game. This will lead to an Alabama victory but not a cover of the point spread.

McClellan got limited playing time last year when Alabama defeated Texas 20-19, rushing six times for 97 yards and a touchdown, averaging 16.2 yards per carry. With an expanded role in Saban’s system, McClellan will cruise past his 70.5-yard rushing prop.

Texas was good against the run in 2022, allowing only 123 yards per game, the second-best mark in the Big 12. But rarely did the Longhorns face an offense that will match Alabama’s physicality.

McClellan served as Jahmyr Gibbs’ backup a season ago but managed to run for 655 yards and seven scores on 112 carries.
