Last season, Nick Saban and the Tide learned that no matter the logo on your jersey or the conference you play in, two losses are a death sentence for CFP hopes. This rings true for one more year until the playoff expands to 12 teams in the 2024-2025 season.

With Anderson gone, Saban turns to a pair of interior defensive linemen to control the line of scrimmage. Justin Eboigbe and Jaheim Oatis are 6-foot-5 monsters and promise to clog all running lanes.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, who is arguably the top defensive back in the nation, looms in the secondary. Kool-Aid’s 15 passes defended were tied for the third-most in college football.

Transitioning players into larger roles is the key to success for Saban and Alabama in 2023.

Kirby Smart has built a juggernaut in Athens, and the key to its success is a well-balanced attack.

Georgia’s 41 points per game in 2022 were the fourth-most in NCAAF. But the Bulldogs also have some adapting to do with the loss of Heisman finalist and National Championship MVP Stetson Bennett to the NFL. Bennett’s 8,429 career passing yards rank fourth all-time at Georgia.

Taking the offensive reins is Carson Beck, who enters his fourth season with the Dawgs. The 20-year-old has been a career backup, appearing in 11 total games and passing for 486 yards and six touchdowns.

Brock Bowers will make the QB transition easier as he’s one of the top playmakers in college football. In 2022, Bowers had 942 receiving yards, 109 rushing yards, and 10 touchdowns.

The 2022 Bulldog’s defense allowed only 12 points per game, but five players were plucked for the NFL Draft. But the unit is left in good hands, as many players are returning to keep the defense humming.

Georgia’s three-leading sackers, Mykel Williams, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, and Javon Bullard, are back. Smael Mondon’s 76 total tackles paced the Dawgs’ defense, with Dumas-Johnson narrowly trailing in second.

Georgia is relying on fresh faces to step up in 2023, but less transitioning is required in Athens compared to Tuscaloosa.
