St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals gave up four runs in the fifth inning Friday, eventually falling 4-3 in a tough loss. On Saturday St. Louis manufactured the winning run in the top of the 10th during a 2-1 victory. Starting pitcher Jack Flaherty finished with 7.0 innings, one earned, seven hits and one walk.

For the starter job on Sunday it’ll be St. Louis’ Jordan Montgomery. Over his 10 starts so far Montgomery is 2-6 with a 4.55 ERA and 52 Ks in 55.1 innings. Montgomery is 30-29 with a 3.91 ERA in 119 career games (118 starts).

Cleveland Guardians

Over on the Cleveland side, they were out-hit 8-7 in the Friday game but still pulled off the victory. On Saturday the Guardians out-hit the Cardinals 2-1 but still fell. Tanner Bibee managed 6.0 innings, one earned, two hits and a walk alongside nine Ks.

It’ll be Hunter Gaddis in the start for the Guardians on Sunday. Over his six games (five starts) this year Gaddis is 1-1 with a 5.26 ERA and 17 Ks in 25.2 innings. Gaddis is 1-3 with an 8.18 career ERA in eight games (seven starts) total.

The Cardinals are 5-1 in their last six Sunday games and 13-6 in their last 19 overall. The over is 6-1 in St. Louis’ last seven in game three of a series.

Meanwhile, the Guardians are 17-7 in their last 24 in game three of a series and 6-14 in their last 20 interleague home games. Cleveland is 4-11 in the last 15 versus a lefty starter.

I’ll stick with the Cardinals in this one. Probably staying away, though. Montgomery is due for a good outing; he’s got 14.1 innings over his last trio with 13 combined earned runs on 22 hits and seven walks. Montgomery went 0-2 in those three, so a quality start would go a long way here. On Saturday St. Louis had something of a lucky win, but to their credit the Cardinals maximized their opportunities. I like St. Louis to keep it going, but it should be another close one.
