Clinton Payne's Randwick tips: $21 Group 1 selection

I’m expecting Giga Kick to prove hard to beat in the All Aged Stakes. Photo: David Gray.

Found it a tough day at Randwick on Saturday so went looking for value runners on All Aged Stakes day.

Here are this week's tips.

OPAL RIDGE (Race 4 No 3) You don't need to be a genius to work this is most likely to be a two-horse race. As impressive as Magic Time was winning the PJ Bell, the race was no guide to Opal Ridge's ability. She got flattened early, lost a plate in the run but she was still able to pick herself up late and hit the line better than all but the winner Magic Time. The firmer track could be just what Opal Ridge needs to turn the tables on Magic Time and if I'm right and this is a two-horse race – the odds are attractive. BET: WIN

KEY LARGO (Race 5 No 10) If there's a horse in Sydney that's knocking on the door it's this bloke but in saying that I'd have preferred to see him in a handicap rather than this set weights and penalties contest. Despite it not being my preferred race, he's going to well to dismiss and to quote the late great Ian Turpie "the price is right". His last three runs, all in high grade have been super, the latest especially when luckless in the Group 1 Galaxy, not seeing clear air until inside the final 100m and going to the line alongside Asfoora. He's going too well not to give a sight and he handles it wet. BET: EACH-WAY

QUALITY TIME (Race 6 No 15) He's a horse on the up in a race where many have been below their best in recent outings or are lumping big weights on a tired track after three weeks of consecutive racing. Quality Time returns to Sydney after two solid foundation runs and he's now ready to strike. Good first-up over the mile then again over 1600m, he was held up in the first half of the straight and should have finished much closer. Carries the limit and effective on wet tracks, he'll give a sight. BET: EACH-WAY

MAKE A CALL (Race 7 No 6) As a rule I normally dismiss the Fernhill form leading into the Champagne, but I think this is the year it might stack up. Not totally sold on Militarize while I think 1600m finds Don Corleone out. Tom Kitten on the other hand will eat up the trip as he showed last week, albeit against easier company and Make A Call threw the race away due to his manners. I'm hoping that a near rail draw will allow Tom Marquand to follow the paint and straight up this wayward colt. I reckon the ability is there, lets hope this week he uses his brain. BET: EACH-WAY

SUBSTANSIAL (Race 9 No 17) I tipped him first-up and I'm giving him the benefit of doubt after he overdid it, running through the bridle for the first half of the race. With the fresh run under the belt, hopefully now he's race more tractably and show what I think is under the hood. Horses don't trial any Better than this bloke did and it's very rare horses that trial that well don't run well early in their campaigns, especially from stables like the Snowdens. BET: EACH-WAY
