Cognizant Classic Odds & Favorites 2024: McIlroy the One to Beat at PGA National

sportsbookreview.com

After a one-week stop in Mexico, the PGA Tour heads to Florida with Rory McIlroy priced as the heavy betting favorite by the Cognizant Classic odds from our best golf betting sites.

With Scottie Scheffler sitting out this year's Cognizant classic, Rory McIlroy is the heavy betting favorite for this weekend's event as the PGA Tour returns to PGA National Resort for what was once known as the Honda Classic.

Chris Kirk is the defending champion of this event but returns with longer odds than he carried before his comeback victory a year ago, even though he already has a win in a signature event this season. Part of the reason for those lengthened odds is the presence of McIlroy in the Cognizant Classic field, as the No. 2 golfer in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) will be a popular pick this week.

Here's our breakdown of the Cognizant Classic odds from our best sports betting sites.

Who is the Cognizant Classic favorite?

Rory McIlroy (+750 via bet365)

As the highest-ranked golfer in the 144-man field, McIlroy is the unsurprising favorite by the Cognizant Classic odds. While he has 29 career rounds played at PGA National's Champions course, including a win in the 2012 Honda Classic, he hasn't played this event since a T-59 finish in 2018. That result followed consecutive missed cuts in this tournament.

McIlroy's current form can also be questioned. He tied for 66th in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and for 24th in the Genesis Invitational two weeks ago.

Florida golf has been kinder to the Sunshine State resident than the West Coast, but these +750 odds represent an implied win probability of 11.76% and that's far too steep of a price against quality competition. There are much better value plays in this field that we'll be targeting with our Cognizant Classic picks.

How to bet on golf

Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance. First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf, including outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament, such as hole-in-one occurrences or individual player performances on certain holes.

Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes. Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
