Detroit Pistons vs Phoenix Suns: Odds, predictions and best bets

Two teams that Detroit head coach Monty Williams knows very well will be on the same court at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday. The Pistons (2-4) host the Phoenix Suns (2-3) this afternoon in a matchup of Williams’ current team and the team he was fired by less than six months ago. Oddsmakers have the Suns as favorites.

NBA betting and interest in the Pistons as at a level we’ve haven’t seen in years, thanks to the exciting young players on the roster, as well as the arrival of Williams, who was coaching in the NBA Finals two years ago.

Call this the “Monty Matchup,” as the Suns face the Pistons and their former coach, Williams, this time as enemies in the Motor City. Amazingly, considering how little time Williams has had in Detroit, these teams have telling similarities.

Both Detroit and Phoenix are excellent at cleaning the glass. The Pistons are third in the NBA in offensive rebounding, and the Suns are sixth in defensive boards. Both teams are a bit sloppy on offense: Detroit leads the league in turnovers, and the Suns are second. And the Pistons and Suns are both good three-point shooting teams, at least so far this season. Phoenix however, is a much better shooting team overall, because they shoot so well from close to the basket. Defensively, the Pistons rank 12th in PPG allowed, and the Suns are 14th.

On Sunday though, Detroit’s leaky defense may be exposed by the long-range Suns. The most vulnerable part of the Pistons D under Williams is defending the three: the Pistons are giving up the 7th-best 3-point shooting percentage. Phoenix, on the other hand, is the third-stingiest team against three-point shooting. That tells us that the Suns are more athletic and aggressive at switching and putting their bodies in front of the shooter beyond the arc. Frankly, so far this season the young Pistons have allowed far too many fast-break, undefended three-point shots to be launched. Opponents are making nearly 38% of their shots from three-point range, or 30 points per game.

What does this mean for NBA bettors and Pistons fans betting on the game? It means the Suns could create a high score, and with Detroit forced to match, that could lead to Cade Cunningham and Alec Burks (and to some extent Jaden Ivey) shooting a lot, and scoring a lot. Be mindful for your Pistons player props.
