ESPN's FPI latest top 4 dominated by B1G teams following Week 7

ESPN’s FPI has updated its latest rankings coming out of Week 7, and the system remains extremely high on the top teams in the B1G. In fact, 3 of the top 4 teams on the FPI belong to the league.

At the top of the FPI is Ohio State, boasting an FPI rating of 27.8. Penn State (25.2) and Michigan (24.5) checked in at No. 3 and No. 4 on the list while Oklahoma was rated the No. 2 team in the country.

It’s hard to discredit those slots for the B1G as the 3 teams are a combined 19-0 to start the season. The trio of B1G East competitors have yet to play each other, but that will shift this weekend with Penn State visiting Ohio State for Week 8.

For comparison, fellow undefeated and reigning national champion Georgia is No. 8 on the FPI. Washington — also undefeated and on the heels of a big win over Oregon — is rated No. 10.

Despite the hot start for the 3 teams, their full outlook for the College Football Playoff is a mixed bag since they must all face each other. Ohio State is No. 2 on the FPI’s updated CFP odds with a 55.5% chance to reach the field, but Penn State and Michigan are further down the list.

The Nittany Lions are 5th with a 34.8% chance to reach the Playoff while Michigan is given a 32% chance to reach the field. Those numbers will change over the course of October and November, but the B1G is currently in a good spot.

The Pac-12 is arguably the toughest league in the country this season, but the conference’s heavy hitters could take down one another before we get to December. As for the SEC, that league is in the midst of a down year and likely has a realistic shot for just one team to reach the CFP field.

It’s still early, but the B1G is starting to build its case to potentially earn a pair of Playoff bids by the time December rolls around. Despite their current FPI outlook, Georgia is still the betting favorite in the national championship odds. Fans looking to get in on the action can head to BetMGM to get started!
