It wasn’t at any stage during the Ireland and Australia game that I felt confident that we’d get a result against Canada – it was actually as I watched them blow hot and cold against an under-prepared Nigeria team.

In the infamous words of Irish cultural heritage: ‘They are no great shakes’.

Ireland were hardly an attacking force against Australia, but that’s honestly how they operate against everyone. Their strength lies in transition, and their best results are against sides who keep possession but who lack the ability to move it when pressed.

Canada are a prime example of this. They come with a reputation of being Olympic champions, but that really doesn’t count for a lot. Vera Pauw will be very confident about grabbing a result here, which should keep hopes alive of progressing to the last 16.

Does that mean Ireland become cautious? No, it means they remain cautious and that generally is enough to see them land big moments.

So, a 1pm kickoff on a Wednesday. Glorious.

Louise Quinn was outstanding in the opening game against Australia and that’s more than enough required to keep Christine Sinclair quiet. She’s 40 for God’s sake.

Away from their penalty, they really didn’t create an awful lot. Australia lacked Sam Kerr so had to change at the last moment, but their movement off the ball is far more sophisticated than that of Canada’s.

That 4-2-3-1 really saw them over-commit midfielders, which should see Denise O’Sullivan have a bit more time to play into channels for McCabe and Payne when they break forward after winning the ball.

We’ve seen it all tournament and we’ll be seeing it again. The scale of this competition is a lot for players to get used to – even those playing at the biggest clubs in Europe.

The thousands upon thousands in the stands are making the acclimatization period very tough for players, and as the stakes get higher, that’s only going to grow.

Ireland haven’t been very lax anyway, and as they’ll likely keep Abbie Larkin on the bench again, everything they do will be laboured and measured.

Under 2.5 Goals

And a second half that’s still deadlocked, one which will be crucial as far as determining qualification from the group, is likely to be decided by one goal – that much is clear.

Ireland have grown used to such encounters, while Canada’s cagey nature needs a shake-up for game two – doing so mid-tournament, however, should lead to problems when facing a back five.

Expect this to be a tactical affair.

Jayde Riviere signed for Manchester United back in January and had four minutes of game time because she really wasn’t up to much.

She’s being asked to remain solid as opposed to venturing down the right, primarily because they want Ashley Lawrence to do so on the far side.

But this means McCabe’s base position can be on the halfway line, and having her start further up the pitch means she’s not going to just be the player initiating the moves – she’ll be the one on the end of them.

This is a serious price about one of the best players in the world.
