Reasoning

We have Friday night college football in the Mountain West as Fresno State travels to Utah State for an evening tilt. Fresno State comes into the game at 5-1, but they did suffer a setback to a really good Wyoming team on the road last week. Utah State is 3-3 on the year, 1-1 in the conference, and coming off of a 20-point victory over Colorado State. I think there is a lot of value here on the visiting Bulldogs, but we need to keep an eye on their quarterback situation before locking in bets. Late in last week’s loss, UCF-transfer Mikey Keene went down with a leg injury. He is questionable on the short week, and his status is part of what has this spread low for the moment. My inclination is that he will play (he was trying to talk his way back into the game last week), but even if he doesn’t, I think Fresno is still in good shape.

The Bulldogs run an aggressive passing attack, and Utah State doesn’t shut down the pass by any means. Utah State put up some wild numbers last week—639 yards of total offense—but they had some turnover issues, coughing it up 4 times. They did force 5 turnovers, but do not expect that to happen against the Bulldogs. Likewise, the Bulldogs have a stifling pass defense, and they tend to make opponents one-dimensional in a hurry. I think the current line is too short in part because of the gaudy performance from the Aggies last week, but let’s also keep in mind that they were down 17-0 in the first quarter before they finally got going. Again, if they find themselves in a hole like that against Fresno State, that will be the end of it. I like this Fresno State team to get back on track with a resounding win, and I like it even more if Keene’s status is confirmed before kickoff.
