Lance Lynn may be in his age-35 season but he's had a ton of recent success against this Giants lineup and our MLB betting picks expect more of the same on Thursday afternoon — read more below.

In a wide-open AL Central, the Chicago White Sox have all the ingredients to make a playoff push, but they’ll be tested by the San Francisco Giants in this afternoon’s series rubber match.

The White Sox rode a strong outing from Dylan Cease and clutch hits from DH Gavin Sheets to win last night’s contest 7-3 and move back to .500. They’ll send veteran Lance Lynn to the bump here.

The Giants’ Logan Webb fell to 0-2 this year and was chased from yesterday’s game after five innings as San Francisco came back down to earth after crushing seven homers against Chicago on Monday night.

Giants vs White Sox predictions

The Chicago White Sox are counting on aces Dylan Cease and Michael Kopech to lead the way to the postseason in 2023, but don’t sleep on Lance Lynn, who continues to be a key piece of the Chicago rotation.

The 35-year-old gave up two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work against a star-studded Astros lineup last week, and he has had success against this San Francisco Giants lineup.

Joc Pederson, Wilmer Flores, and Roberto Perez are a combined 0-for-31 against the White Sox veteran, and Lynn pitched six scoreless innings against San Fran last summer in a 1-0 victory.

While Lynn has one solid outing under his belt already this year, the Giants’ Alex Wood doesn’t have the same luxury. This is his first start of 2023 and he’s coming off a season shortened by a shoulder injury. It would be only natural if the first few frames were a little shaky.

I like the White Sox hitters to get after Wood early. Yoan Moncada (.500 batting average) is off to a blistering start with 11 hits in six games and Luis Robert Jr. had a three-hit night yesterday.

With the prospect of another strong outing from Lynn and plenty of run support, I’m taking these odds for the White Sox to snatch the series decider.

Giants vs White Sox moneyline analysis

The White Sox get the favorites tag here in what feels like a good pitching matchup for Chicago, with the hosts’ bats off to an impressive start this season.

I’ve covered Lynn’s dominance over San Francisco’s hitters above, but there aren’t as many numbers to work with for Wood’s matchup against the Chicago bats.

Still, the White Sox hit .271, with a .767 OPS, against left-handed pitchers in 2022 – and it was right-handed hitters that did most of the damage against Wood last season. He’ll face plenty of right-handers this afternoon.

Despite losing Eloy Jimenez to a hamstring injury, this Chicago lineup is deep and dangerous, as the hosts showed with a 13-hit effort last night.

They’re 5-2 against the Giants in the last seven meetings in Chicago, and I see them extending that strong run this afternoon.

Giants vs White Sox Over/Under analysis

This has been a high-scoring series so far, with both games providing double-digit runs on the way to lopsided results. A repeat of that here might be a stretch but the 7.5-run line is very much within reach.

The Giants’ bats have been boom-or-bust in the opening week of the season – blanked twice by the Yankees in their first series, then piling up 12 runs on Monday. However, they should get a boost with Thairo Estrada likely to be back in the lineup today after missing last night’s contest with a calf injury.

The numbers point towards the Over, which is 3-0-1 in Wood’s last four starts and has cashed in for the White Sox’s last five games. It’s also 8-0-1 in the last nine meetings between these teams in Chicago.

Giants vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Alex Wood (0-0, 0.00 ERA): The Giants will be hoping Wood can get back to his 2021 form (10-4 record, 3.83 ERA) after he was hampered by shoulder issues last year and his ERA ballooned to 5.10 in 2022. When healthy, Wood’s mix of sinker, slider, and changeup remains a tough combination for hitters.

Lance Lynn (0-0, 3.18 ERA): Lynn went 8-7 last year with an ERA of 3.99, falling short of his 11-6 mark and 2.69 ERA in 2021, but those 2022 numbers can be a bit deceiving as the big right-hander turned it on in the second half of the season, with his ERA dropping to 2.09 over his last nine starts.
