Go Bowling at the Glen 2023 Odds, Predictions & Picks

If Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at the Glen is anything like Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, some drama could be ahead for the penultimate race of the Cup Series regular season.

Ty Gibbs, making his eighth Xfinity Series start of the season, dominated the Shriner’s Children’s 200 at the Glen and was on his way to back-to-back wins.

Sam Mayer, however, had other ideas.

Mayer went on to claim his second win in four races–and ruin some Shriner’s Children’s 200 at the Glen picks in the process–while Gibbs finished 17th.

Xfinity Series points leader Austin Hill, who was also in contention for the win, was collected in the incident and also had his day ruined.

While Gibbs was not able to collect his 13th Xfinity Series win, turning around and picking up his first Cup Series win would more than make up for it.

After qualifying fourth, he is one of the top favorites for the Go Bowling at the Glen, along with two-time defending race winner Kyle Larson and fellow Watkins Glen former winners Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch.

Go Bowling at the Glen Predictions and Picks

With just this race and next weekend’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona left in the Cup Series regular season, Gibbs is 18th in the points standings, 49 points behind Bubba Wallace, who currently occupies the final playoff spot.

Therefore, the Go Bowling at the Glen is huge for Gibbs, who finished 12th last week and has two top-ten finishes in the four Cup Series road races this season.

It’s even bigger for Chase Elliott, who won’t be taking part in the championship playoffs unless he wins at Watkins Glen or Daytona.

Elliott very nearly got the win he needed in last week’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. But he ran out of laps to catch up with Michael McDowell, who dominated on the IMS road course.

McDowell might have made the playoffs on points, but by winning for the first time since his surprise 2021 Daytona 500 win, his spot is locked in after he became the 13th different eligible driver to win this season.

Current NASCAR Cup Series Points Standings (Through 24 Races)

Drivers in bold have won at least one race this season and are guaranteed to be in the Cup Series championship playoffs.

  • 1. Martin Truex Jr. – 830 points
  • 2. Denny Hamlin – 770
  • 3. William Byron – 726
  • 4. Christopher Bell – 709
  • 5. Kyle Larson – 698
  • 6. Kevin Harvick – 677
  • 7. Ross Chastain – 676
  • 8. Brad Keselowski – 675
  • 9. Ryan Blaney – 666
  • 10. Chris Buescher – 665
  • 11. Kyle Busch – 660
  • 12. Tyler Reddick – 653
  • 13. Joey Logano – 639
  • 14. Bubba Wallace – 563
  • 15. Michael McDowell – 542
  • 16. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – 542

Cutoff

  • 17. Daniel Suarez – 532
  • 18. Ty Gibbs – 511
  • t19. Chase Elliott – 480
  • t19. Alex Bowman – 480

Elliott, meanwhile, is in full-on desperation mode entering the Go Bowling at the Glen. Mathematically, he could still get in on points, but it would take a wild series of events that is highly, highly unlikely.

In the last four editions of this race, Elliott has finished first, first, second, and fourth. He may be starting 15th, but he has finished 14 or more spots better than he started seven times in his 17 races this season.

Had last week’s race been just a few laps longer, Elliott might have produced a different result, as he was closing in on McDowell down the stretch. This week, he won’t come up short.

Go Bowling at the Glen Starting Lineup (Positions 1 to 16)

  • 1. Denny Hamlin
  • 2. William Byron
  • 3. Michael McDowell

  • 7. Christopher Bell
  • 8. Tyler Reddick
  • 9. Kyle Busch
  • 10. Corey LaJoie
  • 11. Joey Logano
  • 12. Bubba Wallace
  • 13. Chris Buescher
  • 14. Daniel Suarez
  • 15. Chase Elliott
  • 16. Austin Dillon

With the Go Bowling at the Glen race winner pick out of the way early–it’s nice to switch things up sometimes–who else is worth betting on?

McDowell’s win was unexpected, but he has been solid on the road courses this season. In the other three road races, he fnished 12th at Circuit of the Americas, seventh at Sonoma, and seventh in the Chicago street race.

Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Results (Top Ten)

  • 1. Michael McDowell
  • 2. Chase Elliott
  • 3. Daniel Suarez
  • 4. Tyler Reddick
  • 5. Alex Bowman
  • 6. Chase Briscoe
  • 7. Martin Truex Jr.
  • 8. Kyle Larson
  • 9. Christopher Bell
  • 10. Shane van Gisbergen

At BetUS and Bovada, McDowell is +120 for a top-five finish. Also, he is +175 at Bovada to win Group F, which consists of him, Kyle Busch (+200), Christopher Bell (+275), and Daniel Suarez (+450).

At Bovada, Larson is +105 to finish in the top five. He has finished 14th, eighth, fourth, and eighth in the four road races this season, but this will be the first time this season that he has started in the front three rows in a road race and just the eighth time overall in 2023.

Gibbs had a disappointing finish to his Saturday, but that should give him an extra lift for the Go Bowling at the Glen. This will be one of his best starting positions of the season, and he is good value to start and finish near the front.

Lastly, Chris Buescher is +125 at BetUS for a top-ten finish. Buescher has finished outside of the top 15 only seven times this season, and he finished eighth, fourth, tenth, and 11th in the other four road races this season.
