Horse racing tips: James Boyle's best bets for Glorious Goodwood Day Four

13:50 Goodwood – Tritonic – 1pt @ 10/1

Staying handicaps are down near the bottom of my list of optimal races to bet in and I won’t pretend to have a massive edge in them. However, Tritonic could be the answer to solve a tricky puzzle and I’m happy enough to suggest that he’s a worthy bet at any double-figured price.

A talented hurdler who didn’t hit the heights that looked possible in his earlier days, he resumed his flat career in the Chester Cup and was prominent in the betting. It was his first experience of the track, and his first attempt at a more extreme trip, and the cold tactics backfired as he hated how it all panned out, never leaving his pitch towards the rear of the field.

That led to him being a lot less fancied for the Ascot Stakes, over an even more demanding trip at a stiffer track, but he raced prominently this time and produced a significantly better performance to grab third. It confirmed that stamina prowess isn’t a problem, at least in races where they don’t go too hard up top, and offers hope of more to come.

How he’ll cope with a deeper surface seems to be the question mark nowadays but when he was a three-year-old, he posted his best ever timefigures on soft and one of those was when fresh off a 250 day break. His last flat win came at this track, so he gets a check there, and that race was not run to suit. If all goes to plan, he can prove to be a serious contender.

15:00 Goodwood – Bopedro – 1pt @ 16/1

This is very much a draw race where being in the lowest five stalls is an advantage, but the ground could negate that and help to pull those who are wider out into the equation. I like a lot of runners in the field, which doesn’t make it easy to finalise a bet, but have decided I’ll nod towards Bopedro

There’s nothing wrong with his constitution anyway, this being his tenth outing of the season, and more often than not he has performed to a good level. Indeed, he was significantly better than the bare form suggests when 16th of 27 runners in the International Handicap at Ascot last week and finished with running in the tank having found his path blocked off.

Even though there was an ease underfoot and it’s a stiff 7f, the test on offer wasn’t enough to see him at his best anyway and for all that this is a turning mile, he’ll be happier with the additional yardage. It’ll give him more time to find a proper rhythm and he was unfortunate not to win his last race at the trip, also meeting trouble before finishing better than anything.

His last win came on soft ground over a mile at Newmarket, the front two scooting miles clear of the field, and he’s only a few pounds higher now so I don’t think his rating is a problem. Rossa Ryan is riding brilliantly and seeing him booked is a plus, whilst there could be lots of early pace on as riders of those drawn higher try to get a position. 14/1 or bigger looks fine.
