Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea get their pre-season schedule underway with a fixture against Mexican outfit Club America as part of the Florida Cup on their United States tour

Chelsea will finally return to action for the first time in almost eight weeks when they face Club America this weekend in the first game of the Florida Cup, as part of their pre-season tour of the United States.

The Blues only won the FIFA Club World Cup last season and finished a disappointing third-place in the Premier League, but now they are looking to get back on track this season and preparations begin here.

They will be facing Liga MX side Club America, who finished as one of the top sides in the division last season and were CONCACAF Champions League finalists. They have already played three league games in 2022/23, winning, losing and drawing one each.

When is Chelsea vs Club America?

Chelsea vs Club America will kick-off at 3am (BST) on Sunday, July 17 at the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Las Vegas..

The last meeting between these two sides came back in July 2009 in the World Football Challenge pre-season tournament, of which the Blues came away with a 2-0 victory at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

After a goalless first half, two goals in two minutes from Franco Di Santo and Florent Malouda in the final 12 minutes of the game secured all three points for Chelsea and saw them finish top of the group to become champions of the tournament.

Team news

Thomas Tuchel has taken a 29-man squad with him for Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States, and will be expected to experiment and heavily rotate his side during their three games over the next week, so it is unclear how he will line up for the Club America clash.

Armando Broja and new signing Raheem Sterling have since linked up with the squad, but N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have not travelled across the pond due to their Covid vaccination status. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are no longer part of the side after leaving this summer following the expiry of their contracts.

As for Club America, their participation in this pre-season tournament falls at an unusual time in their calendar, having already started their regular domestic season, of which they most recently played on Wednesday. As a result, Fernando Ortiz can be expected to rotate his squad in order to freshen things up.

That could mean that former Barcelona midfielder Jonathan dos Santos and former Watford defender Miguel Layun will be pushing for starts, while the Mexican side already boast the likes of national goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and last season’s top scorer Diego Valdes.
