Don’t expect a classic

The last five meetings between these sides have been drawn, two goalless stalemates preceding three 1-1 results. That outcome would be enough for Erik ten Hag’s to seal a top-four finish and the return of Champions League football next season.

They should be confident of more than that against Chelsea, who have lost seven of their nine games under Frank Lampard, including defeats at Arsenal and Manchester City. In five of those seven losses, there have been under 2.5 goals and Chelsea have the best defensive record outside the top four.

United are unbeaten in their last 16 home league games – 13 wins and three draws – and have the best home defensive record in the division, conceding only eight goals in the top flight. This selection would have landed in United’s last four Premier League games at Old Trafford.

Sterling on the rise

Nobody could have predicted Chelsea’s season would be such a horror show but, while Raheem Sterling has not been his side’s best player, he has shown glimpses of his true quality in recent weeks.

The Englishman came off the bench to produce an assist in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth before scoring twice against Nottingham Forest. On his return to Manchester City at the weekend, he performed well and had two shots on target.

After being left out of the England squad this week, the 28-year-old will be keen to continue his form and is good value at 7/2 to have at least two shots on target, as he had in his last two starts.

Manchester United vs Chelsea tip 2: Raheem Sterling 2+ shots on target @ 7/2 with Betfred

Gallagher to catch the eye again

Casemiro may be the obvious card selection but Conor Gallagher is better priced and has actually been shown more yellow cards in the Premier League than his United counterpart. The 23-year-old has been cautioned 12 times in all competitions, including four in his last seven league appearances.

No player on either side has committed more than Gallagher’s 10 fouls in the previous six games and he will be in for another tough evening against Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Burno Fernandes. It will be no surprise to see Stuart Attwell show the midfielder a yellow card at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs Chelsea tip 3: Connor Gallagher to be carded @ 9/4 with Betfred
