LIV Bedminster Intro

Last week’s LIV Golf witnessed one of its greatest performances when Bryson DeChambeau thrashed a sensational 12-under-par 58 to win by six shots in Greenbrier.

It was just the fourth time a golfer has carded that number at the top level of the game and was only one shot short of the record (a 57 on the third-tier Alps Tour by Irishman David Carey in 2019).

It was DeChambeau’s first win in over two years and vaults him into contention for the Ryder Cup next month.

It also generated headlines across the world for the rebel circuit and this week will probably do the same, whatever happens on the golf course.

Why so? Well, because the owner of this week’s venue - Donald Trump - is not a man to miss out on the opportunity to make news.

Favorites to Win the LIV Bedminster

Bryson DeChambeau (+900)

“Probably the greatest moment in my career,” DeChambeau said after last week’s triumph and he added that when he opened with six birdies in seven holes: “There was a point where I did think about the 54.” It should not be forgotten that he preceded that lap with a 61 which is a startling scoring rate. The bad news? He limped home on this course last year in the 31st.

Cameron Smith (+1000)

After winning LIV London the Aussie Smith insisted that he might be playing better than he did in 2022 when he won five times around the world. But he was 33rd on the defense of the Claret Jug at the Open and 32nd last week back on LIV. He was not a performer on this circuit in July last year so this will be his course debut.

Dustin Johnson (+1200)

When he won LIV Tulsa in mid-May DJ was confident about the summer to come and yet, in reality, he has struggled just as he did before that win in Oklahoma. True, he has a pair of top 10s with LIV in Europe but, otherwise, he has been poor. He missed the cut at the Open and was 32nd last week at The Old White.

Reed Feels the Noise

Take note that Trump Bedminster is in New Jersey because Patrick Reed likes it there and also in the next-door state of New York.

In fact, he has recorded 10 top 25 finishes in 13 starts in those two states which feature lush parkland courses and, perhaps more tellingly, raucous and rowdy galleries.

Reed feeds off their energy and among those many excellent finishes are two victories.

He also carded a 64 to share the first-round lead in this event last year before finishing fifth.

Varner Likes to Go Low

It’s been a good year for Harold Varner III who won the LIV DC event in Washington two months ago.

But it has also been notable how often he has gone super low.

In fact, in his last 20 rounds of LIV Golf, he has been the low scorer once, shared the low score once, and, on another four occasions, ranked second, fourth, third, and second.

That’s six times in those 20 rounds he’d have earned a place, one of them with a shared win, and a full payout with the win.

In the first round, he was solo first at DC and second at Greenbrier.

Steele Likes Fazio

Taking a look at the field’s record on Tom Fazio creations is sometimes quite eye-watering - plenty of them really struggle with the tests he sets.

But Brendan Steele is, in contrast, very solid.

In fact, seven of his last 11 starts on them have reaped top 20 finishes.

He has also been consistent when playing LIV Golf in the States and Mexico.

He’s four-for-six at landing top 20s in those two countries and zero-for-four elsewhere.

He was in excellent form last week finishing seventh and can back that up on a track that should suit him and, as importantly, not suit many others.
