Liverpool v Union Saint-Gilloise preview

Liverpool look to get back to winning ways on Thursday after they fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday evening in their dramatic and controversy-filled game against Tottenham.

The defeat in North London ended a seven match winning streak for Jurgen Klopp's side who look to have put the demons of last season to one side after their struggles for much of the campaign, culminating in a fifth placed finish.

16 points from their opening seven matches leaves the Reds in fourth place in the Premier League table, just two points off the league leaders and defending champions Manchester City.

The six-time European champions started their Europa League campaign a fortnight ago with a 3-1 win in Austria against LASK, coming from behind to earn all three points and take them top of Group E.

They welcome a Union Saint-Gilloise side to Anfield on Thursday, who currently sit in first place in the Jupiler Pro League, having won six of their nine league games this season.

Alexander Blessin took over as manager in the summer and won five of his first six games in charge of the side who finished last season as the third best team in Belgium.

A small three game wobble followed around the start of September in which they went winless but Les Unionistes have since recovered and travel to Anfield having won their last three games to take them top of the league.

The Belgian side reached the quarter finals of this competition last season before eventually falling to Bayer Leverkusen, and started this year's campaign with a 1-1 draw at home against Toulouse.

Union Saint-Gilloise have played a competitive match in England just once before in their history, losing 4-2 against Birmingham in the semi final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1959.
