A 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday was a much better result for Liverpool than it was for Manchester City.

That is not just because City had the better chances on the day and were in the lead until Trent Alexander-Arnold’s excellent equaliser in the 80th minute.

On top of that, City were the home team and had won each of their previous 23 games in front of their own supporters, including against opponents as strong as Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool themselves.

Moreover, Jurgen Klopp’s overall record at the Etihad is poor, at least since Pep Guardiola’s appointment in the summer of 2016.

The long-serving Liverpool boss had not won any of his eight domestic meetings with Guardiola’s Manchester City at the latter’s home ground.

He still has not, but the Reds showed on Saturday that they can stick with City over 90 minutes. The aim now is to do so over an entire season, as Liverpool attempt to win only their second Premier League title since the division was rebranded in 1992.

That is undoubtedly Liverpool’s primary objective this term. Klopp’s team have enjoyed plenty of success on the continent during the manager’s tenure, reaching three Champions League finals and winning one.

But Liverpool will not take the Europa League as seriously this time around. True, they did finish as runners-up in this competition under Klopp in 2015/16. However, that was in a season in which Liverpool had little to play for in the Premier League.

Domestic competition is the priority, but Liverpool should still book their place in the round of 16 by beating LASK on Thursday.

Liverpool slipped up in the Europa League last time out, but they should beat LASK pretty comfortably.

The top two in each Europa League group no longer qualify for the round of 32. Instead, the winner automatically advances to the last 16, while the runner-up goes into the knockout round play-offs.

As a result, there is a clear incentive to finish top these days. Liverpool will not want an additional two-legged tie after Christmas, so they will be going all-out for victory in this one.

A win here would not necessarily wrap up top spot for Liverpool. Toulouse are only two points behind them, so victories for both sides on Thursday would take it to matchday six.

Needless to say, Klopp will hope to get the job done this week. For that he will need a favour from Union Saint-Gilloise, who will face Toulouse away from home. He also needs to ensure his own players get the job done.

It is hard to see Liverpool slipping up. In fact, this should be a comfortable night for the Reds, even if Klopp shuffles his pack.

LASK have lost three out of four so far in Group E, including a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool on matchday one. Klopp’s side should prove too strong here.

The first third of the season has gone pretty well for Liverpool. They are within touching distance of top spot in the Premier League, trailing Arsenal by two points.

Unlike the Gunners, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, Liverpool are through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

And as we have discussed, they are going strong in Group E of the Europa League, winning three of their four matches up to now.

There is still room for improvement, though. Liverpool have only kept one clean sheet in their last five games. They have been reasonably solid so far, but Klopp will want to see his team register more shut-outs in the weeks ahead.

Thursday’s game gives Liverpool the perfect chance to get one. LASK have scored five goals in the Europa League, so they are not incapable of putting the ball in the back of the net.

But Liverpool have won each of their nine home fixtures this term, while they have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five assignments at Anfield. That bodes ill for LASK this week.

Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota started in Liverpool’s front three against Manchester City last time out.

That means Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz could come into the XI here, as Klopp strives to keep each of his five attackers happy.

Diaz has been through a tough time of late. His mother and father were kidnapped back in Colombia, an incident which put football into stark perspective.

Both of the forward’s parents are free now and Diaz will thus be better able to concentrate on all things Liverpool.

He notched two goals against Brazil during the recent international break as Colombia won 2-1 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Provided he starts, Diaz will fancy his chances of improving on his tally for the season against LASK.
