Against Edmonton, Los Angeles was sharp defensively and got some timely scoring to put the game in the win column Saturday night. The Kings held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period of play with neither team scoring, keeping the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. Less than a minute later, at 3:37, Trevor Lewis made it a 2-0 game with his seventh goal of the year off an assist from Quinton Byfield. In the third period, Los Angeles was outshot 10-8 and outscored the Oilers 2-0 to put the game away. Byfield extended to a 3-0 lead with his 15 goal of the season at 7:06 off assists from Vladislav Gavrikov and Matt Roy. Later in the period, Byfield scored his second of the night and 16 of the year, into an empty net, at 17:18 off assists from Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. David Rittich made 26 saves to record a shutout for the Kings in a game where the shots were even at 26. He’s likely to be between the pipes again for this contest.

Against St. Louis, Buffalo got solid goaltending but again failed to see their offense contribute, leading to another tough loss. The Sabres were outshot 11-9 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after the opening 20 minutes of play. Buffalo held a 14-4 edge in shots on goal in the second period with both teams scoring once, leaving the home team down 2-1 at the second intermission. Kyle Okposo tied the game with his 10 goal of the season at the 51-second mark, unassisted, but that was the high-water point for the Sabres. They gave up the go-ahead goal later in the period. In the third period, Buffalo saw the shots even at 11 but gave up the lone goal of the stanza to wind up with the loss. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 23 saves for the Sabres, who held a 34-26 advantage in shots on goal, in the loss. He’s slated to be between the pipes again for this contest.

Los Angeles has won two straight games heading into this contest and they catch a Buffalo team that has struggled of late. The Sabres have dropped four of their last six games, scoring two goals or less in each of those four losses. While Buffalo had success downing the Kings and Sharks out west last month, the fact remains that they have had problems denting the twine with regularity. The Kings have a little momentum on their side with two straight wins and Rittich has been solid between the pipes. Look for Los Angeles to take advantage of Buffalo’s offensive struggles to skate away with a road victory in this contest.

Prediction: Los Angeles Kings -140

Rating:

Los Angeles has seen the under post a 29-18-2 mark in their 49 games this season entering Monday’s action. The Kings have an average total of 5.76 goals per game this season and that number climbs to an average of 5.96 goals per game on the road. Buffalo has seen the under post a 28-20-3 mark in their 51 games on the season entering Monday night, in part due to their offensive struggles and despite a series of injuries in net. Buffalo sees an average of 6.02 goals per game, a number that falls to 5.50 goals per game in their home contests. With the Sabres struggling offensively and the Kings playing well defensively, this game winds up short of the total.

Prediction: Under 6.5
