Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings Prediction, Preview, and Odds

It’s a battle of Western Conference teams on the ice as they do battle for the second time in less than a week, this time in the City of Angels. The Chicago Blackhawks are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night. Chicago downed San Jose 5-2 at home in their previous contest Sunday evening to get back in the win column. Los Angeles was dropped 4-1 by Dallas on the road in their previous contest Saturday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Kings own a 7-1-2 advantage and have won the last three meetings. That includes a 5-0 road triumph in their most recent meeting Friday night.

Chicago Blackhawks Seeking Fourth Win in Five Games

Chicago rebounded from their loss to the Kings as they downed the Sharks in their previous contest, giving them three wins in their last four games. The Blackhawks entered Monday night eighth in the Central Division with a 19-44-5 record and stand 48 points behind the Stars, Avalanche and Jets for the top spot. They were 48 points back of that trio for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division and have been eliminated from playoff contention. Chicago is tied for 31 on the season when it comes to scoring production as they average 2.19 goals per game. The Blackhawks are 29 in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.54 goals per contest. Chicago is 28 in power play success as they convert 15.9% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Blackhawks are 22 in the league in penalty killing as they successfully kill off 77.7% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against San Jose, Chicago started slow but turned up the heat in the later stages of the game to earn the win. The Blackhawks were outshot 11-8 in the opening period and trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes of action. In the second period, Chicago owned a 15-8 shot edge and scored the lone goal of the stanza to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. Philipp Kurashev got the Blackhawks on the board with his 14 goal of the season at 14:02 off assists from Tyler Johnson and Connor Bedard. The third period saw the shots even at eight with Chicago owning a 4-0 advantage on the scoreboard to skate away with the win. Ryan Donato tied the game with his 10 goal of the season at 10:39 off assists from Jarred Tinordi and Jaycob Megna. Kevin Korchinski gave the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead with his fourth goal of the season at 11:51 off an assist from Lukas Reichel. Joey Anderson made it 4-2 with his third goal of the year just 11 seconds later, at 12:02, off assists from Colin Blackwell and Alex Vlasic. Bedard closed the scoring with his 21 goal of the year, into an empty net, at 19:59 off assists from Kurashev and Johnson to secure the win. Petr Mrazek made 25 saves for the Blackhawks, who owned a 31-27 edge in shots on goal, in the win. He’s likely between the pipes here.

Los Angeles Kings Looking to Beat Blackhawks for Fourth Straight Time

Los Angeles couldn’t build off their win over Chicago as they fell at Dallas, alternating wins and losses in their last eight games. The Kings entered Monday 34-22-11 on the season and stood tied for third in the Pacific Division, 13 points behind Vancouver for the top spot. They were tied with Vegas for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the Pacific Division and had one more regulation win in the standings. Los Angeles stands 19 in the league in goals per game as they score an average of 3.01 goals a night this season. The Kings are 3 in goals against by allowing an average of 2.58 goals per contest. Los Angeles is tied for 13 in the league in power play success as they convert 21.7% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Kings are solid in the penalty killing department as they are 1 in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigated 86.4% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Dallas Saturday night, the Kings were stifled offensively in a battle of backup goaltenders in the second game of a back-to-back set. The shots were even at 12 in the opening period but the Kings found themselves down 3-0 on the scoreboard at the first intermission. In the second period, Los Angeles was outshot 10-7 and gave up the lone goal of the stanza to trail 4-0 after 40 minutes of action. The third period saw the Kings with a 9-7 shot advantage and they scored the lone goal of the stanza, though it was too little, too late. Kevin Fiala got the Kings on the board with his 22 goal of the season at 1:11 off an assist from Pierre-Luc Dubois. That was as close as the Kings would get on the night. David Rittich made 25 saves for the Kings, who were outshot 29-28, in the loss. It’s unclear whether it will be him or Cam Talbot between the pipes here.

Chicago has won three of their last four games but they were upended by the Kings at home last week in their previous meeting. The Blackhawks are out of playoff contention and are trying to play spoiler by taking down teams that still have playoff aspirations. Los Angeles has alternated wins and losses in their last eight games, which should put them in favorable position here. The Kings fell to Dallas Saturday in their previous game but they have dominated this series in the last few years. Playing at home, with as poorly as Chicago has looked as the visiting team, gives the Kings the edge as they win by multiple goals.

Prediction: Los Angeles Kings -1.5 (-137)

Rating:

Chicago has seen the under post a 39-27-2 mark in their 68 games on the season entering Monday. The Blackhawks have seen an average total of 5.74 goals per game this season and that number climbs to 5.91 goals per game on the road this season. Los Angeles has seen the under post a 42-22-3 mark in their 67 games this season entering Monday’s action. The Kings have an average total of 5.60 goals per game this season and that number falls to an average of 5.38 goals per game on home ice. Los Angeles has recorded five straight unders and the teams have fallen short in each of their last five meetings. Look for this game to wind up short of the total.

Prediction: Under 5.5
