The San Diego Padres and the New York Mets meet Monday in MLB action from Citi Field. San Diego is fresh off a weekend series versus the Braves. After wins in two of the first three games, on Sunday the Padres posted a blowout win. As for New York, they played the Marlins over the weekend. The Mets won the first pair in that set, then on Sunday New York lost by five runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat place.

San Diego Padres

San Diego beat the Braves 5-4 Friday and 4-1 in the Saturday matchup. In the Sunday finale of the series, the Padres scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings on the way to a 10-2 win. Seth Lugo put up 6.0 innings in the start with one earned on five hits and four walks.

As starter for the Padres on Monday, it’ll be Yu Darvish. In his first start of the season Darvish went 5.0 innings with one earned, three hits and four walks in a no-decision. He’s 95-75 with a 3.50 ERA in his MLB career.

New York Mets

Over on the Mets’ side, they took care of the Marlins 9-3 Friday and 5-2 in the Saturday matchup. On Sunday in the finale New York was out-hit 11-9 in a 7-2 defeat. Carlos Carrasco managed 4.2 innings in the start with six earned, six hits and three walks.

It’ll be Max Scherzer in the starting role Monday. In his first two starts of the year Scherzer is 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA. He’s got eight earned on 12 hits and four walks in 11.1 innings. Scherzer is 202-103 with a 3.12 ERA in his career.

The Padres are 5-2 in their last seven overall and the over is 5-0-1 in their last six in game one of a series. The over is 5-2 in San Diego’s last seven road games versus a right-handed starter.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 46-21 in their last 67 at home and 39-18 in the last 57 in game one of a series. New York is 1-4 in their last five Monday games.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with New York in this one. Should be a pretty interesting series, though; the Padres looked good on Sunday. Scherzer really needs a good start here; he’s gotten fairly deep into both his first two starts but the numbers haven’t been great (eight earned in 11.1 innings). If Scherzer can escape with a quality start here I think New York will be in good shape. On Sunday the Mets gave up three runs in both the first and fifth innings, destroying any hope of a comeback. They’ll need to cash in on their offensive chances better in this series, but I think the Mets have a decent enough shot if all goes well.
