The Vancouver Canucks signed J.T. Miller to a team record 56 million dollar contract over the next seven years. The team's core group of players has not seen much success, but they are being doubled down on with hopes that Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes will improve. The management group has a lot of work to do and this Miller extension doesn't help the organization address their weakness in the defence corps. There are teams like the LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks who have loaded up with prospects and will look to execute the rebuilds over coming years, so the Canucks need to rely on what they have.
Miller extension is an indication that the Canucks are not going to rebuild the team. The team signed Ilya Mikheyev to improve the penalty kill. Bruce Boudreau is the new head coach. The Canucks want to win now and focus on their current players. They want their young players to develop. If they don't, drastic measures will be taken. It's a bold strategy but it's the only way to get better. There are new players like Mikheev, Curtis Lazar and others. Canucks fans hope they can improve their penalty killing. Their defense needs to be better and they need to focus more on the back end.
Jonathan Myrenberg is the most likely right-shot defenceman prospect for the Canucks. Filip Johansson will play in the SHL this coming season. Vasily Podkolzin should be a 20-27 goals scorer this season and get more opportunities on special teams. Viktor Persson is now playing in Finnish Liiga.
