The Eagles are on the verge of throwing away the NFC East title thanks to an appalling malaise that has seen them drop for of their previous five. While highly unlikely, the Eagles have a chance of restoring their position atop the division, but they’ll need to beat the Giants while receiving a late and improbable Christmas gift from the Commanders.

The Eagles’ lone victory in the last month came at home against the Giants on Christmas Day. They’ll need to repeat that feat at MetLife Stadium for any chance of winning the NFC East.

The Giants have lost three in a row since their recent three-game winning streak was snapped by the Saints on Dec. 17. Tyrod Taylor is set to get the start for the 5-11 Giants, who, aside from pride and draft positioning, don’t have much to play for in the season finale.

Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni will be scoreboard-watching on Sunday, ready to withdraw Jalen Hurts and other starters if the Cowboys are, as expected, on their way to victory in Washington. Devonta Smith’s ankle has steadily improved, but the jury is still out on whether he’ll be available for Sunday.

The Eagles defeated the Giants 33-25 on Christmas Day thanks to 170 rushing yards and a 301-yard Hurts passing performance. It was the fourth time Hurts has thrown for more than 300 yards this season. Philly is 5-1 when rushing for 120 or more yards, while the Giants have allowed an average of 133.0 rushing yards per game, the NFL’s fourth-worst mark.

The much-maligned Eagles defense has allowed 34 touchdown passes, the NFL’s second most. However, the Giants have a miserable time trying to protect their carousel of quarterbacks, conceding sacks on 15% of pass attempts, the NFL’s worst rate and 8% higher than the league average.

The Giants have been an NFL-best 18-10-1 ATS underdog since the start of last season and come into this contest 5-1 ATS in their last six. The Eagles were 14-point home favorites in the previous meeting but only won by eight.

However, the Eagles will be desperate to enter the playoffs on a positive note and can ill-afford another embarrassing outing. Even if Philly rests some of its best players in the second half, look for the Birds to win and cover, albeit marginally.

Saquon Barkley has rushed for at least 60 yards in nine of 13 encounters this season. He struggled against the Rams last week, gaining just 39 yards on 12 carries, so he’ll be deadset on having a proficient rebound contest. Barkley had 80 yards on 23 carries against the Eagles in Week 16 and should be called upon as much in the Week 18 battle.

The Eagles’ run defense has worsened throughout the season and allowed 221 yards last week against the lowly Cardinals. In the previous seven games, Philly has allowed an average of 150 yards on the ground per game. Considering those trends, Barkley should be able to eclipse the 60-yard barrier for the 10th time this season.

The Eagles have one game to try and alleviate the lingering sour taste from the previous month or so. Expect them to play a much better opening half against a Giants team with little to play for. Also, Sirianni will have more options for resting some top players if they get an early jump on the Giants.

Philly has been astoundingly poor in the first half and needs a much better opening 30 minutes in its season finale to enter the playoffs with a badly needed slight injection of confidence.
